Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I saw your advertisement in the newspaper that you are looking for some volunteers to work as a receptionist in the museum, I wanted to express my interest in this job. I really enjoy interacting with different people and i also want to do something for my community to grow and there is nothing better than being a volunteer for the museum of the city.

I worked as a front desk team member in Tim Hortons for more than three years. I hold good communication, problem-solving and customer service skills. By being a resident of this town, I have excellent knowledge about the museum.

I will be available to work every evening after 4pm. I am also attaching my resume to this letter for your reference, please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. I will be looking forward for your reply.

Kind regards

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your letter addresses all parts of the prompt successfully. You clearly explain why you want to do voluntary work by stating that you enjoy interacting with people and wish to give back to your community. You also describe your relevant skills and qualities, such as your communication and customer service background at Tim Hortons and your local knowledge as a resident. Furthermore, you provide specific details regarding your availability, mentioning that you can work every evening after 4 pm. All three bullet points from the instructions are covered adequately, with relevant ideas and a clear, polite tone throughout. To achieve an even higher score, some of these ideas could be extended further with more specific details or examples, such as elaborating on how your customer service experience directly relates to museum visitor assistance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening greeting to the final sign-off. You use paragraphing appropriately, separating the introduction, the body paragraphs detailing your reasons and skills, and your availability alongside the closing remarks. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to connect your thoughts, such as 'By being a resident' and 'I am also attaching'. However, referencing and transitions between sentences are sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition between your explanation of wanting to volunteer and your past work experience could be smoother to create a more unified flow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your message clearly. You make successful attempts at using less common vocabulary and appropriate phrases, such as 'express my interest', 'customer service skills', and 'for your reference'. However, there are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'in the museum' instead of 'at the museum' or phrasing 'I will be looking forward for your reply' where 'looking forward to' is standard. Spelling and word forms are generally fine and do not impede communication, but expanding your range of sophisticated vocabulary and refining collocations will help you reach a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing appropriately. There are several error-free sentences, showing good control over basic structures and punctuation. However, some minor grammatical errors persist, such as the comma splice in the first paragraph ('...receptionist in the museum, I wanted to...'), lowercase 'i' instead of 'I', and preposition use. These errors do not impede communication, but to move up to a higher band, you would need to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over punctuation.
