Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I saw your advertisement in the newspaper saying that you are looking for some volunteers to work as a receptionist in the museum, I wanted to express my interest in this job. I really enjoy interacting with different people and i also want to do something for my community to grow and there is nothing better than being a volunteer for the museum of the city.
I worked as a front desk team member in Tim Hortons for more than three years. I hold good communication, problem-solving and customer service skills. By being a resident of this town, I have excellent knowledge about the museum.
I will be available to work every evening after 4pm. I am also attaching my resume to this letter for your reference, Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. I will be looking forward to your reply.
Kind regards
Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation to volunteer, stating that you enjoy interacting with people and want to contribute to your community and the city museum. You also outline relevant skills and qualities, such as your three years of experience as a front desk team member at Tim Hortons and your strong communication abilities. Finally, you provide clear details about your availability, mentioning that you are free every evening after 4 pm. All three bullet points from the task instructions are addressed, though the explanation of your motivation is slightly more developed than your description of local knowledge, which remains concise. Overall, the ideas are relevant and support the purpose of the letter effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The opening salutation and introductory sentence set a polite and appropriate tone for a formal letter of application. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the first covers your intent and reasons, the second details your background and skills, and the third specifies your availability and next steps. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as transitional phrases like 'By being a resident of this town' and 'I am also attaching', though linking words could occasionally be varied more flexibly to enhance the flow between sentences. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the information logically and make it easy for the reader to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating useful terms like 'advertisement', 'volunteer', 'customer service', and 'reference'. There are occasional instances where word choice could be more precise or idiomatic, such as saying 'work as a receptionist in the museum' instead of 'at', and minor punctuation errors involving sentence splitting, such as the comma splice in '...in the museum, I wanted...'. However, these vocabulary and spelling choices do not impede communication, and you successfully attempt some less common lexical items appropriate for a job application context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You utilise a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like framing. There are some grammatical slips, such as the lowercase 'i' in 'and i also want', and occasional punctuation issues, including a missing comma or period boundary near 'for your reference, Please do not hesitate'. Despite these errors, the majority of your sentences are clear, and the mistakes rarely impede communication. Good control is shown over verb tenses when describing your past work experience at Tim Hortons and your future availability in the evenings.
