Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I saw your advertisement in the newspaper saying that you are looking for some volunteers to work as a receptionist in the museum. I wanted to express my interest in this job. I really enjoy interacting with different people and i also want to do something for my community to grow and there is nothing better than being a volunteer for the museum of the city.

I worked as a front desk team member in Tim Hortons for more than three years. I hold good communication, problem-solving and customer service skills. By being a resident of this town, I have excellent knowledge about the museum.

I will be available to work every evening after 4pm. I am also attaching my resume to this letter for your reference. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. I look forward to your reply.

Kind regards

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score for this criterion. You clearly explain your motivation for wanting to volunteer by stating that you enjoy interacting with people and wish to give back to your community. Furthermore, you effectively describe your relevant background and skills, specifically mentioning your experience as a front desk team member at Tim Hortons and your strong communication abilities. Finally, you provide precise details regarding your availability, stating that you can work every evening after 4 pm. All three bullet points from the task instructions are covered well, and your tone is appropriately polite and formal for a job application letter. To push into higher bands, some of your ideas could be extended with even more specific elaboration on why you are particularly passionate about this specific museum, giving your application a slightly sharper focus and deeper development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, allowing the reader to follow your points easily from the opening greeting to the final sign-off. You use paragraphing effectively and purposefully: the first paragraph introduces the purpose of your letter and your motivation, the second outlines your relevant skills and experience, and the final paragraph states your availability and provides next steps. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect your thoughts, such as transitional phrases like 'By being a resident of this town' and 'I am also attaching my resume'. To achieve an even higher score, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing across sentences feels entirely natural and seamless, avoiding any slight mechanical feel in how your ideas link together.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message while attempting some less common phrases related to employment and community service. For instance, phrases like 'front desk team member', 'customer service skills', and 'for your reference' show that you have a satisfactory command of appropriate workplace terminology. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'in the museum' rather than 'at the museum' in your opening, and the lowercase 'i' in 'and i also want'. Your spelling and word formation are generally accurate and never impede communication, but to reach a higher band, you would need to demonstrate a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary, including more sophisticated lexical items and precise collocations typical of formal professional correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, reflecting an ability to construct compound and complex sentences like 'I saw your advertisement in the newspaper saying that you are looking for some volunteers...' and 'Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, most notably the capitalization error with the lowercase pronoun 'i' and occasional minor articles or preposition slips. Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication and your overall control of basic structures is quite good. To move towards a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher proportion of error-free sentences, alongside more polished punctuation.
