Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I recently read in the newspaper about part-time volunatry work in the museum which will be unpaid work. However, I want to let you know that i am really intrested working in the museum.

To add more, during summer vacation i worked for public library so i have a little bit knowledge about museum work, Also i have heard that library and museum works are quite smiliar so it will be easy for me to set up in environment. Moreover, i am a big fan of history and i am very organized person so i would keep eveything clean and up to date. Although i understand that there will be no salary given but i would happy to join as this will help me provide more information about our history.

Furthermore, I am having long reading vaction in my school. I would like to work in the morning to evening, if neccesery i can extend my working hours too.I look forward to your positive response. If you need anything from my side please feel free to reach out.

Best regards,

Suhani Jingar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task prompt, covering the purpose of the letter, skills and qualities, and availability. All bullet points are present, and the letter format is appropriately handled with the correct opening salutation. However, some ideas show the characteristics of the band where they are positioned, meaning certain points are developed more fully than others. For instance, the explanation of why you want to do the voluntary work and the mention of your availability are included, but the description of your skills could be expanded further with more specific detail. The overall purpose of writing to the museum director is clear, and the tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal throughout, demonstrating a sound understanding of the communicative requirements of a general training correspondence task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with clear logical links between the paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'To add more', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to connect your ideas, although some of these linking phrases feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in nature. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct topics, moving from your introduction and motivation to your background and skills, and finally to your availability. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, referencing can occasionally be improved to ensure smoother transitions between sentences. Overall, the text is easy to follow, and the layout follows the standard conventions of letter writing well enough to meet the expectations for this level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your lexical resource is adequate for the task, providing enough vocabulary to communicate your message effectively. You make some successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'organized person' and 'unpaid work', but there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'volunatry' instead of 'voluntary', 'intrested' instead of 'interested', and 'smiliar' instead of 'similar'. Furthermore, phrases like 'set up in environment' show awkward collocation. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they highlight the limitations in vocabulary control that keep the response at this level. Expanding your range of synonyms and paying closer attention to standard spelling will help elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional and subordinate clauses, as seen in 'Although i understand that there will be no salary given but i would happy to join'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as capitalization issues with 'i', missing articles like 'in the museum', and awkward phrasing like 'I am having long reading vaction'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. You manage a basic range of tenses adequately, though greater control over prepositions and sentence construction is needed to produce error-free sentences consistently and move up to the next band.
