Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you as I recently saw your advertisement in the newspaper looking for persons available to do part-time job at the museum.
I am an archeologist by profession. Recently, I got enrolled in Master's in History programme and have been looking for an opportunity to work in a museum for my thesis completion.
I am a suitable candidate for this job as I am skillful and extremely cautious in handling the artifacts. I am also well aware of the history of different art pieces displayed at the museum will can be useful in guiding the visitors. Moreover, I also have the skills to repair and preserve numerous artifacts with great care which can be a useful contribution from my side.
I will be available throughout the week and probably will take off during the weekends as I also have to focus on my studies. I am comfortable working in evening shifts and this is the high time when there is a less hustle and bustle so that I can focus on other aspects of my duty.
I hope you will consider my application and I look forward to your response soon.
Kind regards,
Arzoo

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score in this category. The writer clearly explains why they want to volunteer by stating their background as an archaeologist and their need to complete a thesis for a Master's in History. They also describe relevant skills and qualities, such as being cautious with artifacts and knowing how to repair and preserve them. Furthermore, availability is detailed adequately, specifying evening shifts and weekday preferences. The ideas are extended and supported well throughout the letter, establishing a clear purpose and position from the opening paragraph. To push towards a higher band, some points, such as the specific contributions to the museum's exhibits, could be expanded with even greater depth and specific examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from beginning to end. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the statement of purpose to the reasons for volunteering, relevant skills, availability, and a polite closing. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as using 'Moreover' to introduce additional skills and 'Furthermore' or similar transitional phrasing implicitly guiding the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently to structure the text logically. However, minor mechanical referencing and transitions prevent it from reaching the highest tier. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between sentences could be even more seamless, ensuring the flow is entirely natural and sophisticated without relying on standard formulaic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'archaeologist', 'artifacts', and 'preserve'. These choices show a relevant thematic understanding and an awareness of style suitable for a professional application letter. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing that prevent a higher mark. For instance, phrases like 'got enrolled in Master's in History programme' lack proper article usage, and expressions like 'will can be useful' or 'high time when there is a less hustle and bustle' show awkward collocations and slight lexical slips. To reach the next band, the vocabulary needs to be more precise and natural, with fewer awkward phrasing choices when attempting complex professional descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over various structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like time clauses. There are frequent error-free sentences, particularly in straightforward descriptive statements. However, a number of grammatical errors persist throughout the text. Issues include minor errors in article usage, such as missing 'a' before 'part-time job' and 'Master's', as well as tense and modal verb confusion in the phrase 'displayed at the museum will can be useful'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but occasional prepositional inaccuracies occur within grammatical patterns. To move to a higher band, the writer must eliminate these persistent minor errors and demonstrate more consistent control over complex grammatical structures.
