Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing this letter to show my keen interest in the voluntary part-time positions that you posted for the museum. I would like to share a few details about why I would be a good candidate for the unpaid position in the museum.Firstly I live very near to the museum, so I will be very flexible for the shifts, whrther to change it or reach on an on-call shift. As I am a good communicator, the visitors at the museum may benefit from my this skill by enjoying the museum tour while talking and discussing. Moreover, I am very diciplined and I love organization, so you do not need to worry about late arrivals or no-shows.

Therefore this voulntary experience would help me to enhance my linguistic skills as well as it would help me to be extrovert and make new connections as I can meet new people at work.

Thank you for your time and please refer to the days listed below for my availability to work.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You successfully cover all the bullet points required in the prompt. You explain why you want to do voluntary work at the museum, such as living nearby and enhancing your linguistic skills, you describe useful skills like communication and organization, and you provide details about your availability. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, your explanation of why you want to volunteer or your description of your skills remains somewhat general and could be expanded further to fully realize the potential of the task. Nevertheless, all core requirements of the prompt are clearly addressed, ensuring a solid completion of the communication goal.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement and a logical progression of ideas, beginning with your purpose, moving through your skills and personal benefits, and concluding with your availability. You use basic cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore', to connect your thoughts. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly abrupt, particularly in the way paragraphs are grouped. For instance, combining several distinct ideas into a single dense middle paragraph makes the text feel a bit crowded. To reach a higher level, you could ensure smoother transitions between sentences and better paragraph structuring to guide the reader effortlessly through your letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items like 'keen interest', 'flexible for the shifts', and 'linguistic skills'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect this band level, such as 'whrther', 'diciplined', and 'voulntary'. Additionally, phrases like 'reach on an on-call shift' sound a bit unnatural in standard English. These inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from scoring higher. To improve, focus on proofreading your spelling carefully and using more precise collocations related to workplace availability and duties.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your response, such as conditional or relative clauses like 'As I am a good communicator, the visitors... may benefit'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing commas after introductory connectors like 'Firstly', awkward phrasing in 'from my this skill', and missing capitalization in days of the week at the end of the letter. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher level, aim for greater control over complex sentence patterns and ensure punctuation and modifiers are handled accurately.
