Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering why the writer wants to do voluntary work, relevant skills and qualities, and availability. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and uneven. For instance, the reason for wanting to work at the museum is touched upon with statements like 'i have intrest in historical and unique', but this is brief and under-developed rather than fully elaborated. Similarly, the description of skills mentions experience in a clothing brand and arranging products, which is relevant, but the explanation remains superficial. The position and purpose of the letter are clear enough to communicate with the reader, but the overall treatment of the bullet points stays at a basic level, preventing the response from reaching a higher standard.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable beginning, middle, and end, and the paragraphs are organised logically around distinct themes such as motivation, skills, and working hours. However, the management of cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. While basic paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate ideas, transition markers between sentences are sparse or overly simplistic, such as starting multiple sentences with 'I also' or 'Now i need to tell you'. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the abrupt shift in the opening paragraph when moving from seeing the poster to requesting a discussion of the details. The progression of ideas is present, but it lacks smooth and sophisticated linking devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'voluntarily', 'fascinating', and 'discribing', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word form, spelling, and word choice. For example, 'intrest' is misspelled, 'historical and unique' uses an adjective as a noun, and 'discribing' contains a spelling error. Additionally, phrasing is frequently repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'work' and 'job'. These lexical inadequacies and errors are noticeable and occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader in grasping the precise meaning intended.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical structures used are relatively simple and restricted, consisting largely of basic sentence patterns. When the writer attempts complex sentences, such as 'I work in Edenrobe from 10AM to 5PM, so it is very difficult for me to do this work 1st time', the structures are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including missing capitalization ('dear sir', 'i'), incorrect prepositions or articles ('you poster', 'in evening 5 to 10'), and awkward verb tense usage ('you are looking'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited control over sentence forms and punctuation.
