Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to request you about a part-time voluntary job. One of my friends told me about this job in your museum.
Firstly, I want to inform you that I am interested in this type of unpaid work and I would like to work in the museum because I love historical art, culture and wildlife too. So, I want to increase my
knowledge after working in the museum.
Moreover, I have already one year work experience of museum. I know how to guide the visitor about the historical and ancient things. I have also some skills like how to feed some animals and how to handle them carefully.
Lastly, my friend told me that you require employee for weekends only. It would be easy for me to work here at weekends because in weekdays I am also doing another job.
I hope you will consider my request and allow me to work in the museum. I am waiting for your prompt response.
Yours sincerely.
Nosheen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task prompt, covering the reasons for wanting to work at the museum, relevant skills and qualities, and availability. For instance, you explain your interest in historical art, culture, and wildlife, describe your previous year of museum experience along with animal handling skills, and state your availability for weekends. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; while the reasons and experience are mentioned clearly, the explanation regarding your current weekday job is slightly brief. To move to a higher level, you should extend and support all your ideas with richer details and examples to ensure a fully rounded development across every bullet point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical structure that follows a standard letter format, beginning with a salutation and concluding appropriately. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to sequence your points. However, the use of these connectors can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. Additionally, referencing is not always completely clear, such as how certain sentences transition abruptly into new topics without smoother links. To achieve a higher score, you should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that paragraph transitions flow more naturally from one idea to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message with words like 'voluntary job', 'unpaid work', and 'experience'. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'prompt response', but there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'request you about a part-time voluntary job' instead of applying for a position, and referring to 'historical art' rather than historical artifacts. There are also occasional phrasing inaccuracies, like 'require employee for weekends only' instead of employees. To improve this criterion, you need to use a wider range of precise lexical items and demonstrate better control over collocations and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as the use of subordinate clauses with 'because'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical slips include article omissions and noun-plural agreement errors, such as 'one year work experience of museum' instead of museum experience, 'guide the visitor' instead of visitors, and 'require employee' instead of employees. There are also minor prepositional issues like 'work here at weekends' instead of on weekends. To reach the next band, you should incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures and carefully check your plurals, articles, and prepositions.
