Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to you that I have heard you are looking for people to do part-time valuntary and I want to apply for the voluntary work at the museum.
I want to apply because I like to explore different cultures as well as traditions and also like to talk with people on different topics. I am a social person and it is a great opportunity for me to learn about voluntary work and enhance my experience in this field which is beneficial for my future career.
I have several skills and qualities such as good communication, time management, and soft skills. Also, I am a very honest person and a lot of patience that would be beneficial for the voluntary work and I can manage easily in difficult situations.
I would be available in the weekdays and on weekends and my availability is 9 am to 3pm because I have other work in the evening and on the weekends I am available for full-time.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Jagjit Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points in the task: you explain your interest in cultures and meeting people, list relevant personal qualities, and give availability. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the closing is appropriate for a formal application. Your reasons and qualities are relevant, but some are only briefly stated. For example, “good communication, time management, and soft skills” would be more convincing if you explained how one of these would help visitors or museum staff. The availability details also need clarification: you say you are available on weekdays and weekends, then give 9 am to 3 pm and say weekends are full-time. Specify which hours apply to each, so the director can understand your schedule precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement, with separate paragraphs for your motivation, qualities, and availability, followed by a suitable closing. This makes the main information easy to locate. You also use basic links such as “because,” “as well as,” and “Also” to connect ideas. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical, and some sentences combine several points without showing their relationship clearly. The final availability paragraph, for instance, moves from weekday hours to evening work and then to full-time weekend availability in one sentence. Use clearer sequencing and separate the weekday and weekend details into distinct sentences. This would make the progression more precise and the cohesion less dependent on simple linking words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the application, including relevant terms such as “cultures,” “traditions,” “communication,” and “time management.” There is also some attempt to use more formal language, particularly “beneficial for my future career” and “Thank you for your consideration.” However, several choices are imprecise or repetitive, which limits the range and naturalness of the letter. “Soft skills” is vague in this context, while “a lot of patience” is not the natural expression for describing a personal quality. There is also a spelling error in “valuntary.” Choose specific skills and use more natural collocations, such as “patient” or “interacting with visitors,” to make your meaning clearer and more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including clauses with “because” and “that,” and the reader can generally understand your message. Some sentences are controlled, such as “Thank you for your consideration.” However, there are some grammatical errors and awkward constructions. In the opening, “I am writing this letter to you that I have heard” does not form a correct sentence; use “I am writing because I heard that…” The phrase “I am a very honest person and a lot of patience” also needs parallel grammar, for example, “I am honest and patient.” In the availability sentence, the ideas need clearer sentence boundaries. More accurate clause construction and punctuation would improve control while retaining your longer sentence forms.
