Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

The purpose of the letter is to applying for a voluntary work at your museum.

I am writing this letter for applying a job position in your museum which you posted 3 days ago online. As you mention that this is the security job and will be unpaid it suits me because since my childhood i am visiting this museam and i always wanted to do some voluntary work for this place that i can do through this work.

I used to work for a secutiy company hydra for 3 year and i learned valueable ethic and experince from there which can help me to comaplete the task on this work. This job demand long time standing time which i can do just beacuse of the last work had same requirements.

I am available from next Monday so if i would be select for this work please reply this letter before saturday so i can start my work from Monday.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Your Faithfully,

Harvinderpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain your personal connection to the museum, describe relevant security experience and stamina, and state when you can begin. The reason that you have visited since childhood gives the application a personal purpose, while your previous security work is relevant to the role. However, some details are less fully developed: “valuable ethic and experience” does not specify the particular skills you gained, and your availability is given as a start date rather than the days or hours you can work. The request for a reply before Saturday is clear, but could be phrased more tactfully. Add specific examples of useful qualities and a fuller availability schedule to make the application more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, with separate paragraphs for your application, experience, and availability, followed by a closing. This helps the reader locate the main information. However, the opening sentence repeats the purpose stated immediately afterwards, and the second paragraph combines several ideas in a long, difficult-to-follow sentence. Connections such as “because” and “which” are used, but the relationships between ideas are not always clear. For example, the sentence about visiting the museum since childhood could be separated from the explanation that the unpaid role suits you. Remove the repeated opening and use shorter, clearly linked sentences to create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the application, including “voluntary work,” “security,” “requirements,” and “available,” so the reader can understand the general purpose and your experience. However, the range is limited, and several inaccurate word choices or spellings make the letter less professional: “job position” is redundant, “valuable ethic” is unclear, and “complete the task on this work” is not a natural expression. There are also spelling errors such as “museam,” “secutiy,” and “experince.” Choose precise phrases for the skills you gained and proofread carefully. More natural application language would help you express your suitability with greater clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause with “because” and a relative clause with “which.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors sometimes make the meaning harder to follow. For example, “The purpose of the letter is to applying” should use the infinitive form, while “I am writing this letter for applying” needs a different grammatical pattern. The long sentence beginning “As you mention” also has unclear clause structure, and “if I would be select” contains errors in the conditional and passive forms. Practise accurate infinitives, conditionals, and passive constructions, and divide long sentences into shorter units. Check punctuation and capitalisation as well.
