Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Museum Director,
I am writing this letter to show my interest in doing voluntary duty at National Museum of Canada. In the early age, my parents taught me to read the books, novels to keep myself literate and busy on my own but that turned out to be life saving advice. I turned out quite fond of our ancient culture and heritage.
Being an enthusiast in the History and deep knowledge of our history from reading many novels make me an ideal candidate to work for the Museum. I am well aware of this position remain unpaid as listed which will serve my inner self to work for something towards my purpose to serve the community. In addition as a Science Professor from the past 10 years , I have ability to deliver knowledge in an efficient way.
Talking about the timings, I am willing to work in the eveninngs on the Thursday and Friday of the week after 3 PM. Let me know, if you want to setup an interview to find more about myself.
Yours faithfuly
Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requirements: you explain your interest in history and community service, identify your experience as a science professor, and state that you are available on Thursday and Friday evenings after 3 p.m. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the unpaid nature of the role is acknowledged. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, you mention being knowledgeable about history but do not give a specific example of how that knowledge could help museum visitors or staff. Your availability could also be clearer about whether this applies every week. Adding one concrete example of a relevant skill and clarifying your schedule would make the application more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it moves from your motivation, to your suitability, and then to your availability and interview offer. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these main points, and phrases such as “In addition” and “Talking about the timings” signal transitions. Some connections are less smooth, however. The opening paragraph moves from your parents’ reading advice to your interest in heritage without clearly explaining the link, and the second paragraph combines your historical interest, unpaid motivation, and teaching experience in a crowded sequence. Use clearer links between these ideas and make the final paragraph’s transition more formal. This would make the progression feel less mechanical and more consistently easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “ancient culture and heritage,” “enthusiast,” and “deliver knowledge,” and your meaning is generally understandable. There is also an attempt to use less common expressions, such as “serve my inner self,” but this phrase is unnatural in this context and makes your motivation less clear. Several word choices or collocations are also inaccurate, including “voluntary duty,” “in the early age,” and “deep knowledge of our history from reading many novels.” Spelling errors such as “eveninngs” and “faithfuly” are noticeable. Aim for natural, precise phrases suited to a formal application, and proofread spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main message remains understandable. For instance, the sentence beginning “In the early age” uses a subordinate clause, while “I am willing to work…” clearly communicates your availability. However, some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make the phrasing awkward. In “Being an enthusiast in the History and deep knowledge… make me,” the subject structure is unclear and the verb does not agree naturally with the ideas listed. Other examples include “I have ability” and “on the Thursday and Friday of the week.” Review articles, agreement, and sentence construction, and use punctuation consistently—for example, avoid the comma in “Let me know, if…” More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the letter.
