Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to let you about my willingness to do part-time unpaid work at your museum.
I have always been very curious to learn about historical and cultural heritages. For this reason, I took a history course at my university, which further enhanced my historical knowledge. I am very keen to work as a voluntary tour guide at your museum, as I believe it will be a wonderful hobby for me.
In addition to having an in-depth historical knowledge, I have good communication skills which makes me a suitable candidate to be a tour guide at your museum.
I want to inform you that I have my academic classes in the morning, so I would be available in the evening from 4pm to 10pm on all weekdays. However, I will not be available on the weekends, as I have to go to my hometown in another city to meet my parents. I am hoping to hear a positive response from you.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requirements: you explain your interest in history and the museum, identify relevant knowledge and communication skills, and give specific weekday availability. Your intention to work as a voluntary tour guide is clear, and the letter maintains an appropriate formal purpose. The reasons and qualifications are relevant, though some are asserted rather than fully supported: for example, you say the history course enhanced your knowledge but do not give an example of what you learned, and “a wonderful hobby” could be linked more directly to what you hope to contribute to visitors. A brief example of experience or a specific way you could help would extend the ideas further while keeping the application focused.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: application, motivation, relevant qualities, availability, and closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and links such as “For this reason,” “In addition,” and “However” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. The reader can readily understand that your classes affect your weekday schedule and that weekends are unavailable. To make the progression even more polished, connect your skills more explicitly to the tour-guide role—for instance, explain how your communication skills would help you engage visitors. The closing sentence also moves quickly from your schedule to requesting a response; a short sentence offering to discuss your application would create a smoother finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “historical and cultural heritage,” “enhanced my historical knowledge,” “communication skills,” and “suitable candidate.” These choices communicate your interest and qualifications clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some phrasing is less natural or precise: “let you about my willingness” is not the usual collocation, while “a wonderful hobby” sounds more focused on personal enjoyment than on volunteering. “In-depth historical knowledge” is also a strong claim without supporting detail. Aim for natural application language and precise descriptions of what you can offer, such as guiding visitors or explaining exhibits. This would add flexibility and control to the vocabulary already present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “which further enhanced my historical knowledge” and the reason clause “as I have to go to my hometown.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and the time information is expressed clearly. Some grammatical errors remain. In “communication skills which makes me,” the verb should agree with the plural subject (“make”); “an in-depth historical knowledge” also uses an unnecessary article with an uncountable noun. The opening construction “I am writing to let you about” is grammatically incomplete; use “let you know about” or “inform you of.” Check agreement, articles, and verb patterns during revision, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
