Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to show my interest in working as part-time voluntary work in your museum. Last week, I read your advertisement regarding this position.

Currently, I am on summer break and want to utilize my time by serving to community. Last year, I did voultary work in an ngo, and learned some essential skills such as time-management and teamwork. I am also very good at public speaking. I believe that the skills I have learned in my pervious voluntary work and the quality of public speaking are highly required to work in the museum. This why I am considering myself as a suitable candidate for this unpaid role.

I am avaliable everyday for work until October. If you need any further information about my studies and references from my preious voluntary work, please let me know.

I hope you will consider me for this role. Thanks in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Manish Thakur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that you want to serve the community during your summer break, mention skills gained through NGO volunteering and public speaking, and state that you are available every day until October. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the polite closing suits an application. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, you do not explain what kind of museum work interests you or give a specific example of how your teamwork or speaking skills would help visitors. Adding one or two concrete details about the role you could perform would make the application more persuasive and fully extend your relevant ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening application, a paragraph about your motivation and abilities, and a final paragraph covering availability and next steps. This makes the message easy to follow, and phrases such as “Last year” and “If you need any further information” help connect ideas. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. The transition from your previous NGO experience to your suitability for museum work is asserted rather than clearly explained, and “This why” interrupts the flow. You could improve progression by grouping motivation separately from skills, then explicitly linking each skill to a museum duty, such as welcoming visitors or explaining exhibits.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to an application, including “advertisement,” “time-management,” “teamwork,” “public speaking,” and “references.” These choices communicate your experience and intentions, but the range and control are uneven, with several noticeable spelling and word-choice problems: “voultary,” “pervious,” “avaliable,” and “preious.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “working as part-time voluntary work” and “serving to community.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they reduce precision and polish. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; using terms such as “volunteer position,” “contribute to the community,” and “previous experience” would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “I believe that the skills…” and the conditional “If you need any further information…”. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “This why I am considering myself” is missing “is” and uses an awkward verb construction; “want to utilize my time by serving to community” also has an incorrect grammatical pattern and missing article. In “Last year, I did …, and learned,” the comma before “and” is unnecessary between the coordinated verbs. Work on articles, verb patterns, and sentence punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
