Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the voluntary work at the museum.

I received news from my friend that the local museum is looking for a part-time employee. I am interested in this job because I need to submit an employee reference letter at my university to graduate. My course requires me do a project by completing a community work. Although this is an unpaid work, this would perfectly work for me as I want to gain a valuable experience.

I have a few skills that I can use to work effeciently. I am a multilingual and I can speak English, Spanish and Hindi. Additionally, I am pursuing my major in history subject, and I can definitely assist visitors significantly by using my abilities. Moreover, museum management will not have to spend funds on my training, as I can easily engage into work.

My schedule is flexible nowadays because I am on official study break. Therefore, I am available to work for any required shifts.

I look forward for your response.

Regards,

Manish

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain your motivation, identify relevant skills, and state when you can work. Your history studies and ability to speak English, Spanish, and Hindi are particularly relevant to helping museum visitors. The explanation of your motivation is clear, but it focuses mainly on needing a reference for university and gaining experience; it could be more fully developed by explaining your interest in the museum or its work. Availability is also rather general: “any required shifts” does not specify days or hours. The response therefore covers the task well overall, while some points remain less developed or specific.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, with each body paragraph addressing a distinct purpose: motivation, skills, and availability. The progression is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Moreover,” and “Therefore” help connect ideas. The opening and closing also make the format recognisable as a formal application. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, however, and the final availability paragraph is brief compared with the others. You could improve the flow by linking your history studies and language skills more directly to particular museum duties, and by giving a more specific availability statement. Overall, the organisation is clear and effective.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “multilingual,” “pursuing my major,” “assist visitors,” and “flexible.” These choices communicate your qualifications and availability clearly. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “submit an employee reference letter,” “a valuable experience,” and “engage into work.” There is also a spelling error in “effeciently.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the letter. Aim for conventional application language and check spelling; for example, describe the reference as something you need to obtain, rather than submit as an employee reference.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure “Although this is an unpaid work, this would perfectly work for me” and the reason clause beginning “because.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some grammatical patterns need more accurate control: “requires me do a project” needs an infinitive marker (“to do”), and “I look forward for your response” uses the wrong preposition after “look forward.” The sentence beginning “Moreover” also has a somewhat awkward structure, which makes the relationship between training and your readiness less clear. Continue practising verb patterns and prepositions while retaining your varied sentence structures.
