Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the volunteer part-time position in your organization. Currently, I am doing Masters in History and have keen interest in this field.
I am working on a project about the museum and this job will help me collect some glimpses of information which would be benefical for my project work. I was looking for opportunity near to my home so I decided to apply for this positon as I live only 1km from the museum.
Moreover, being a history students, I have in-depth knowledge about the artifcats, historical antiques, human civilzation, local history. I have good presentations skills so I can provide assistance to visitors being their guide. I work with another NGO who can help us with fund raising and ogranizing social events.
Fortunately, I have opted online course that gives me flexible availability for work. I am available after the October 15.
Yours faithfully,
Manny

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requirements: you explain that the role would support your history project, describe relevant knowledge and presentation skills, and state when you could begin. Your reasons for applying are clear, especially your interest in history and proximity to the museum. The response also includes useful details about guiding visitors and helping with events. However, some points are not fully developed: the project-related benefit is described vaguely, and “available after the October 15” does not clarify which days or hours you can work. To strengthen the application, explain how you hope to contribute to the museum as well as what you would gain, and give a more precise availability schedule.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening states your purpose, the following paragraphs give your reasons and qualifications, and the final paragraph addresses availability. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Fortunately” help signal the progression, and the ideas are generally easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth, however. The sentence about your project and the museum’s information is followed by your proximity to the museum, but the relationship between these reasons could be made clearer. The qualifications paragraph also moves quickly from historical knowledge to presentations and NGO work. Grouping these skills by how they would help the museum, and using more precise transitions, would make the progression more cohesive and less list-like.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including relevant terms such as “in-depth knowledge,” “historical,” “visitors,” and “fund raising.” These choices communicate your background and potential contribution. There are also attempts at more specific language, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “collect some glimpses of information,” “provide assistance to visitors being their guide,” and “flexible availability.” Spelling errors, including “benefical,” “positon,” and “artifcats,” also reduce accuracy. Choose natural phrases that express your meaning directly, and proofread carefully. For example, you could describe gathering information for your project and say that you can guide visitors through exhibits.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “as I live only 1km from the museum” and a relative clause in “an online course that gives me flexible availability.” The main message remains understandable, and the letter’s sentences are generally complete. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and plural forms: “doing Masters” needs an article or possessive, “a history students” has a number mismatch, and “presentations skills” should use the plural possessive form. The final sentence, “I am available after the October 15,” also has an unnecessary article. Review these patterns and check agreement and articles when editing; greater accuracy across these structures would make the application more polished.
