Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in the voluntary/unpaid work at your museum.
One of the primary reasons for choosing a voluntary work is to get the work experience, which is an essential part of my course next semester. I will gain a valuable experience which can add 10 extra marks to my result at the end of semester. Moreover, it will be a good use of my spare time after the classes.
As my subject is related to public relations, I have very polished interpersonal skills. I believe that my communication skills are well suited for the roles such as receptionist or a guide for visitors in the museum. Furthermore, my fast typing and ability to use different software can also prove beneficial for the admin work.
I am available to start from coming Monday, which is 1st June 2026. As I have to attend classes in the morning, I will be available from 3pm to 9pm on weekdays and 11am to 9pm on weekends.
I hope you will give my request careful consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Fazal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you explain that the placement would provide course-related experience, identify relevant interpersonal, communication and administrative skills, and give specific weekday and weekend availability. Your purpose is clear from the opening, and the closing is appropriate. The detail about gaining “10 extra marks” makes your motivation concrete, although it could be framed more professionally by emphasising what you hope to learn and contribute, rather than the assessment benefit alone. You could also develop your suitability with a brief example of helping visitors or using software. Overall, the response is relevant and supported, with room to make the reasons and qualifications more fully persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information is organised in a clear sequence: application and motivation, relevant skills, availability, then a polite closing. Each main point has its own paragraph, which makes the letter easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” help connect supporting details, and the progression from your course to your skills and schedule is logical. To make the cohesion more natural and flexible, avoid relying mainly on additive transitions; for example, connect your public-relations studies directly to how you could assist museum visitors. The availability paragraph is also clear, though the date and schedule could be presented in a slightly more integrated way. Overall, the organisation is effective and the reader can readily locate each requested detail.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “express my interest,” “interpersonal skills,” “communication skills,” and “beneficial.” These choices convey your qualifications clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. However, some collocations and phrases are not fully natural, such as “choosing a voluntary work,” “get the work experience,” and “a valuable experience.” “Very polished interpersonal skills” is also an unusual combination. These inaccuracies do not obscure your meaning, but they limit the precision and naturalness expected at a stronger level. Aim to learn vocabulary in common word partnerships and choose expressions that emphasise what you can contribute to the museum as well as what you will gain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a range of sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “As I have to attend classes in the morning” and a relative clause in “which is 1st June 2026.” Most sentences are clear, and punctuation and paragraphing support the reader. A few grammatical inaccuracies remain: “a voluntary work” needs a different article or construction, and “a valuable experience” is more naturally expressed without the article in this context. The phrase “from coming Monday” also needs a more standard grammatical form, such as “from next Monday.” These are local errors rather than obstacles to understanding. To strengthen accuracy, check articles and time expressions carefully while retaining the complex sentence structures you already use.
