Student answer (Band 6.0)
DEAR SIR or MADAM,
Im writing you to express my immense pleasure and describe my happiness when I listened about your advertisement that you are looking for part time voluntary workers at the museum.
I would like you to consider me for this purpose as I am a zoology student at university. It will be helpfull for me in my studies.
I am interested in old animal structures and species that are extinct now. Being a student I will be a better option as I have knowledge about preservation of various bones and tissues. It will help polish my skills. I will be able to study various species of animals at the museum. I am preparing for my practical exams.
If you fine me an excellent person to perform this duty please let me know as early as possible as I have to streamline many things and my routine to fit in this duty. I will be available from next week.
Looking forward to your positive feedback.
Yours sincerely.
Madiha Iqbal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you explain that museum work would support your zoology studies, describe relevant knowledge of preserving bones and tissues, and state that you can start next week. The application is clearly directed to the museum, and your interest in extinct species gives it a relevant personal reason. However, some points are only partly developed. For example, you do not specify which days or hours you could work, and the practical-exam detail is not connected clearly to how you could contribute to the museum. Explain more directly what you hope to learn and how your knowledge would benefit visitors or staff, while giving a more precise availability schedule.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a generally clear sequence: you introduce your application, explain your interest and relevant background, then discuss availability and close politely. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and the reader can follow the main purpose. Some links between ideas are less clear, however. The shift from your interest in extinct species to your practical exams feels abrupt, and the final request beginning “If you fine me an excellent person” is difficult to follow. Use clearer transitions to show how your studies relate to the museum role, and organise the closing around a direct request for consideration followed by your availability. Consistent letter formatting would also make the message easier to read.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “zoology student,” “extinct,” “preservation,” and “practical exams,” which helps communicate your background and motivation. There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “immense pleasure” and “polish my skills,” but some choices are unnatural or imprecise in this context. “Listened about your advertisement” does not express how you learned of the vacancy, while “old animal structures” is vague. Spelling and word-form errors such as “helpfull” and “fine” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, precise collocations suited to a formal application, rather than overly emphatic wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including the reason clause “as I am a zoology student at university” and the conditional opening “If you fine me…”. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and formality. For example, “Im writing you” needs an apostrophe and a more suitable verb pattern, and “It will be helpfull for me” has an incorrect adjective form and sentence construction. The conditional sentence near the end is also not formed correctly. Review verb patterns, articles, and punctuation, and check each sentence for a complete, natural structure. More accurate control of these forms would make your application clearer.
