Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest in the open position for part-time voluntary work at the museum. I would love to find out if the position is still available.
I have always been fascinated by historical artefects and the stories associated with it. Volunteering at your museum would allow me learn closely about the cultural heritage while helping visitors appreciate the historical significance of the exhibits. Additionally, I would enjoy interacting with people from various backgrounds and create a positive experience for them.
I believe I have several qualitites that would make me a suitable candidate for this role. I have strong communication and interpersonal skills, which will help me assist visitors and answer their questions efficiently. Furthermore, I am organised, proactive, and egar to learn.
Regarding my availability, I would be able to volunteer on Saturdays and Sundays between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. I am flexible working additional hours during public holidays, if required. I am happy to discuss a schedule that is best suits the museum needs.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.
Your faithfully,
Jane

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly fulfils all three requirements: you explain your motivation through your interest in historical artefacts and cultural heritage, identify relevant qualities such as communication skills and being proactive, and specify weekend hours and flexibility on public holidays. Your purpose is clear from the opening, and the closing is appropriate for an application. The reasons and skills are relevant and supported with brief explanations, such as how your communication skills could help you answer visitors’ questions. To develop the response further, make one or two points more specific—for example, mention any experience with visitors, customer service, or historical subjects. This would add individual detail rather than relying mainly on general qualities.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information is arranged in a clear, logical sequence: application purpose, motivation, suitability, availability, and closing. Separate paragraphs make each part easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Furthermore,” and “Regarding my availability” guide the reader through the letter. The progression is consistent and the tone remains suitable for a formal application. Some connections could be made more smoothly: the transition from your interest in heritage to interacting with visitors is understandable but could explain how these motivations relate. The final availability sentence also combines flexibility and scheduling in a slightly awkward way. More precise links between ideas would make the cohesion feel less formulaic and more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “cultural heritage,” “historical significance,” “interpersonal skills,” and “proactive.” These choices communicate your interest and suitability clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, several spelling errors, including “artefects,” “qualitites,” and “egar,” which reduce accuracy. A few phrases are also not fully natural or precise: “learn closely about” and “create a positive experience for them” could be expressed more idiomatically. Aim to check spelling carefully and choose collocations that sound natural in this context. More specific vocabulary about museum work could also make your application more distinctive.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and more complex structures, such as “Volunteering at your museum would allow me…” and the relative clause “which will help me assist visitors.” Most sentences are clear, and the reader can follow your meaning throughout. A few grammatical errors remain. In “would allow me learn,” the infinitive needs “to”; “between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.” should use “and” after “between”; and “a schedule that is best suits” contains an unnecessary verb form. There is also a punctuation spacing issue in “skills, which.” Review infinitive patterns, paired prepositions, and clause structure. Correcting these points would make the otherwise clear sentences more consistently accurate.
