Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest for voluntary work in a museum.

Recently, I saw an advertisement in newspaper about the job posting for museum and I am very interested to perform this role. I want to work at museum because I was always been interested in history and this job will give me opportunity to explore more about my passion. Moreover, I personally like to help community and voluntary work .

Apart from that, I used to work at one retail store where I have gained many important skills such as communication, team work, customer service and time management. I believe that my skills would be very helpful for this job. Although I just finished my graduation, I will be avaliable to start this job from next month. I would really appreciate if I get chance to work at museum and serve the community.

Yours faithfully,

Neel Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in history and helping the community, identify skills from retail work, and say you could start next month. The application purpose is clear and the tone is appropriately polite. However, some parts are less fully developed than others. Your availability is vague because you do not specify days or hours, and the skills are listed rather than illustrated with an example of how you used them. The reason for choosing this particular museum could also be more specific. Add practical availability details and briefly connect one or two skills to duties such as welcoming visitors or answering questions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it opens with the purpose, gives reasons for applying, describes relevant experience, and closes politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main ideas, and linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “Apart from that” make the progression easy to follow. Some cohesion is mechanical, however, because these transitions announce ideas without showing a more precise relationship between them. The second paragraph also combines your experience, skills, availability, and closing request, so its focus becomes crowded. Group the skills and experience together, then give availability and a clear request in a separate final paragraph. This would make the progression more controlled and the letter easier to scan.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range for an application letter, including relevant terms such as “customer service,” “time management,” “communication,” and “serve the community.” The meaning remains clear, but several word-choice and collocation problems make the language less natural: “interest for voluntary work” would be better expressed as “interest in volunteering,” and “perform this role” is awkward in this context. There are also spelling and form issues, including “avaliable” and “team work.” Aim for precise, natural phrases suited to a formal application, and check spelling carefully. More specific vocabulary for museum duties, such as assisting visitors or supporting exhibitions, would also strengthen the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “where I have gained many important skills” and a conditional structure in “I would really appreciate if…”. The message is generally understandable, though some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I was always been interested” has an incorrect verb form; use “I have always been interested.” Articles and prepositions also need attention in phrases such as “at museum” and “give me opportunity,” while “I would really appreciate if” needs “it” after “appreciate.” These errors rarely obstruct meaning, but proofreading for verb forms and missing articles would improve accuracy. Continue using varied sentence structures while keeping them controlled.
