Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the part-time voluntary/unpaid work at the Melbourne Museum. I am a science student in my 5th semester at RMIT. I have always been curious about museums, though I have never worked at one. It is compulsory from the Higher Education Authority for students to complete 80 hours of voluntary work over summer. I was glad to hear, the openings at your museum coincided withmy summer break. As a result, I would be able to gain valuable experience and contribute to a local museum.

I was born and raised in Melbourne. I am a hard working individual who values honesty and commitment. Moreover, my interpersonal skills allow me to interact with people of all ages. I recently completed a sign language course that taught me how to communicate with people who struggle with speech. I believe my skills perfectly fit the job description posted on your website.

I am available to work 24 hours a week. My daily hours are flexible at your discretion. However, I can not work on Mondays and Wednesdays because of my summer courses in university. I will be looking forward to working under your leadership and I hope we can decide on my schedule once all the necessities are completed.

Yours faithfully,

Muhammad Ali Noorani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter clearly fulfils all three requirements: you explain your motivation through your interest in museums and the required 80 hours of volunteering, describe relevant qualities and skills, and specify your weekly availability and unavailable days. The connection between your science studies and the museum role is also relevant, and the sign-language course gives a useful, concrete example of how you could assist visitors. Your purpose remains clear throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly how your science background or visitor-facing skills could benefit the museum, rather than relying on the general claim that your skills fit the job description. You could also make the proposed schedule more definite while retaining flexibility.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised effectively into an opening application and motivation, a paragraph on personal qualities, and a final paragraph about availability. This sequence follows the task naturally, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “As a result,” and “However” help show relationships between ideas. The reader can follow the progression without difficulty. Some connections could be smoother: “I was glad to hear, the openings…” has an awkward break after “hear,” and the final sentence combines future hopes, leadership, and scheduling in a way that feels crowded. Consider separating the practical availability details from the closing request, and use transitions only where they clarify the relationship between points.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “interpersonal skills,” “commitment,” “coincided,” and “contribute.” The sign-language example also lets you express a specific ability rather than relying entirely on general claims. Some phrasing is less natural or precise, however: “the openings at your museum” could be expressed more idiomatically as “the volunteer positions at your museum,” while “people who struggle with speech” may sound less considerate than “people with speech difficulties.” “All the necessities” is vague in this context; naming the remaining arrangements would be clearer. These occasional collocation and precision issues do not obscure your meaning, but more consistently natural phrasing would strengthen the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, such as “I am a science student…” and the sentence explaining that you cannot work on certain days because of your courses. Most grammatical choices communicate your meaning clearly. Some errors and awkward constructions remain: “I was glad to hear, the openings…” needs a grammatical connection, such as “I was glad to hear that the openings…,” and “I can not” should be written as “I cannot.” In “I hope we can decide on my schedule once all the necessities are completed,” the passive construction is unclear and could be recast more directly. Review punctuation around subordinate clauses and aim for consistently controlled sentence patterns.
