Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I am interested in joining the voluntary work at the museum for few months.

The academic program of my school has given objectives to enroll in one of the interested area of choice. I always wanted to work with museum as I always find the evidence of history very interguing. It would be fascinating to know more about the our ancestoral roots and their origin.

I hope that I would be able to apply some special skills such as using radiations tools to know the exact age of bones and incident occur at which year.

I will able to join the team from next week of April. I would be able to work more than 8 hours as there will be semester break for 2 months.

I hope that I would be suitable candidate for this voluntary role and learn several things under your leadership.

Yours Sincerely,

Het Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in history, mention a relevant technical skill, and give an approximate start date and availability during the semester break. The motivation is relevant, especially your interest in learning about ancestral origins, but it could be developed more clearly by explaining why this particular museum appeals to you. The skills section is also underdeveloped: “using radiations tools” is mentioned, but you do not explain your experience or how you could use this skill to help museum visitors or staff. Your availability would be clearer if you specified exact days and hours. A more direct application and a little more supporting detail would make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening application, paragraphs about your motivation and skills, and a final paragraph about availability and suitability. This makes the main points easy to locate. However, the progression within some paragraphs is less smooth. For example, the school’s academic requirement is introduced before your personal interest, but the connection between these reasons is not fully explained. The final paragraph combines availability, suitability, and learning goals without a clear transition. Some linking phrases, such as “I hope that,” are repeated. Grouping related details more tightly and using a wider range of natural transitions would make the letter flow more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “voluntary work,” “academic program,” “semester break,” and “ancestoral roots,” and your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as describing tools for dating bones. However, several spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision: “interguing” and “ancestoral” are misspelled, while “radiations tools” is not a natural phrase. Expressions such as “joining the voluntary work” and “one of the interested area of choice” are also awkward. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this would help you express your ideas more precisely and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some more complex forms, including “as there will be semester break for 2 months” and “as I always find the evidence of history very…” This shows an attempt to vary sentence structure, and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “I will able to join” needs “I will be able to join,” and “the our” contains an unnecessary article. In “I hope that I would be suitable candidate,” the article “a” is needed, and the modal construction is awkward in this context. Review articles, auxiliary verbs, and modal forms, and proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
