Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I am willing to do a voluntary work at your museum.
I want this part time job because to get enrolled my further studies, this will help me a lot to grant my seat in university. Apart from this, it will work as my leisure time activity and I 'm keen interested to know about the Greek and Roman architecture that is main subject in your museum.
I have some customer service experience from the Bulla Library that is a well known library in the city. I am multilingual and fluent speaker, full of confidence, always jumps first to help others and punctual.
I would like to work on weekends anytime but on weekdays only in the evenings. I have school in the morning so I can't show up in the morning or afternoon.
I will wait to hear back from you.
kind regards
Richard

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain your motivation, mention relevant qualities and experience, and state when you are available. The interest in Greek and Roman architecture and your customer-service experience at the library make the application relevant. However, the reason connected with university admission is not fully explained, and the claim that the work will help you “grant my seat” is unclear. Your skills are listed rather than linked to museum duties; for example, explain how being multilingual could help visitors. The availability is clear, though “weekends anytime” could be made more precise. The letter is appropriately framed as an application, but developing these points more clearly would make it more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible order: purpose, reasons for applying, relevant experience and qualities, availability, and a closing. This makes the main message easy to follow, and phrases such as “Apart from this” help connect your reasons. The paragraphing also separates the main stages of the application. Some links between ideas are less smooth: the university motivation, leisure activity, and interest in architecture are placed together without explaining how they relate. The qualities sentence is a compressed list, which interrupts the flow. Use complete, connected sentences and clearer transitions to show how each point supports your application. A more formal closing and consistent letter conventions would also make the organisation feel more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for an application, including “customer service experience,” “multilingual,” “punctual,” and “architecture.” These choices communicate useful information, but the range and control are uneven, and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise. “Do a voluntary work” is not idiomatic, while “keen interested” combines two expressions incorrectly. “Grant my seat in university” does not clearly express your intended meaning. The phrase “full of confidence” is understandable but less natural in this context than describing yourself as confident. Aim for accurate collocations and a professional register, especially when explaining your motivation and strengths. More precise wording would make your application sound clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and the reader can generally understand your message. For example, “I have school in the morning so I can't show up in the morning or afternoon” communicates your schedule clearly. However, some grammatical errors remain, including “because to get enrolled” and “I 'm keen interested,” where the sentence construction is faulty. In “always jumps first to help others,” the verb form does not agree with the implied subject “I.” The opening also shifts from the requested “Dear Sir or Madam” to “Dear Sir.” Review clause construction, subject–verb agreement, and punctuation around joined clauses. Greater accuracy in these areas, alongside more varied sentence patterns, would strengthen the letter.
