Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you that I am willing to work as a volunteer at your museum.

Firstly, I am a university student at the University of Waterloo, and I study Curation and Exhibit Design. Moreover, due to the occasion of Christmas and New Year holidays, I am free for a month, and I have nothing to do. That is the reason I think it is a great opportunity for me to learn something new if I enrol in this part-time voluntary work, because the study is also related to this work. Moreover, I need experience in this field because I am planning to apply for a job in this field after completing my degree.

Furthermore, last year I worked as a receptionist at a famous restaurant in the town, The Haveli, where my main responsibilities were helping customers inquiries, resolving conflicts, and learning how to work with a team. I think these qualities are crucial when we work at a place where we need to interact with clients and provide information about history. Apart from that, I also study these things in my course, and I feel confident that I can easily understand my duties at this job and give 100 per cent without any complaint.

Finally, as I already mentioned, I am free for a month, so my availability is Monday to Friday from Open to Close, but at weekends I am available after 12:00 PM because every weekend I visit the temple with my parents for worship. My parents do not know how to drive, so I need to go with them so that they do not face any difficulty in travelling.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Sargundeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear purpose: you apply to volunteer, explain the connection to your Curation and Exhibit Design studies and future career, describe relevant customer-service experience, and state your availability. The examples from your receptionist role—answering customer enquiries, resolving conflicts, and working in a team—support your suitability. Your reasons are generally extended, although the explanation that you are free and “have nothing to do” is less persuasive and could be replaced with a more focused account of what you hope to contribute or learn. The availability is specific, but “from Open to Close” is unclear; give actual hours or ask about the museum’s shifts. Overall, the letter fulfils the task clearly, with some details that could be more precise and professionally framed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from your application and motivation to your experience and availability, and the paragraphing makes each main point easy to locate. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help guide the reader, while the closing is appropriate. However, these transitions are somewhat formulaic, and repeated use of “Moreover” makes the links feel mechanical. Some sentences also carry several ideas at once, particularly the paragraph explaining your studies, holiday availability, learning goals, and career plans. Grouping related points more tightly and using clearer links between them would make the progression smoother. The explanation about accompanying your parents is understandable but could be shortened so the practical availability remains the focus.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including relevant terms such as “Curation and Exhibit Design,” “resolving conflicts,” “interact with clients,” and “availability.” These choices communicate your experience and motivation, and the reader can understand your meaning throughout. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, however: “due to the occasion of Christmas and New Year holidays,” “helping customers inquiries,” and “give 100 per cent without any complaint” do not sound idiomatic in this context. “Clients” is also less suitable than “visitors” for a museum. Aim for natural, professional phrasing rather than adding formal-sounding expressions; this will improve precision while preserving the useful range you already show.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “where,” and “so that,” and most of the message remains easy to follow. There are some grammatical errors, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “helping customers inquiries” needs a grammatical construction such as “responding to customers’ enquiries,” and “I am free for a month” would be clearer as “I will be available for a month.” The sentence beginning “Moreover, due to…” also becomes overloaded, making its relationships between ideas harder to control. Check possessives, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries, and divide long sentences where necessary. More consistent accuracy across these structures would strengthen the letter.
