Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing to bring to your attention a matter regarding part-time voluntary work at the museum.

Regarding the part-time work, I came to know by my relative that you guys are looking for someone to do part-timework for your museum. I am willing to do this unpaid work, to express my knowledge about ancient scripts.

To provide some specific context; By profession I am a History professor in Saint Marry school near the museum and with that experience I have a pretty good knowledge about our History. Not only this might help you to get a good instructor for your museum, but also it may help me to grab some new knowlegde. My availablity is Friday to Sunday; as I have to go and teach the students in school from Monday to Thursday.

I would be increadibly grateful if you could give me the chance to serve in the musuem.

Yours faithfully,

Atharva Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that you want to share your knowledge of ancient scripts, describe your work as a History professor, and state that you are available from Friday to Sunday. These details make the application relevant and your purpose is clear. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, you mention being able to act as an instructor, but do not explain what museum duties or visitor activities you could help with. Your reason for applying also shifts to gaining “some new knowledge” without specifying what you hope to learn. Develop these points and make the application more directly tailored to the museum’s needs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from the reason for writing to your experience and availability, then closing with a polite request. The availability is easy to find, and phrases such as “Not only this” help connect related ideas. However, the opening paragraph repeats “part-time” and “work” without adding much information, and the transition “To provide some specific context” feels somewhat mechanical. The long sentence beginning “Not only this might help you” combines several ideas, making the relationship between your contribution and what you hope to gain less clear. Use clearer paragraphing for your motivation, relevant skills, and availability, and connect each point more directly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the task, including “voluntary work,” “ancient scripts,” “History professor,” and “available,” so your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “I would be incredibly grateful.” However, some choices are too informal for an application letter, particularly “you guys,” while “bring to your attention a matter” is an awkward way to introduce an application. Spelling errors such as “knowlegde,” “availablity,” and “musuem” also reduce accuracy. Choose more natural formal phrases and check spelling carefully; this would make your adequate range more precise and appropriate to the audience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main information is usually understandable. For instance, the sentence explaining your teaching schedule gives a clear contrast between your workdays and availability. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “To provide some specific context; By profession I am a History professor,” the semicolon is not appropriate, and the following capitalisation interrupts the sentence. The construction “Not only this might help you … but also it may help me” is not formed correctly; use “This might not only help you … but also help me.” There are also missing articles in places, such as “in museum.” More consistent control of sentence boundaries and parallel structures would improve accuracy.
