Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to apply for the role of a volunteer at the museum and art gallery in Apapa. I love learning new things and experiencing a challenging environment. The fact that the museum has quite a collection of different artifacts of historical origin makes me even more excited to know more about their history.

I am a fast learner and adapt quickly to new environment. In my previous experience as a volunteer for Elizabethan foundation, I am opened praised as being a good listener and good communicator. My interest in history and cultural heritage makes me a good fit for the role and the passion I have for volunteering makes me selfless.

I would love the opportunity to interview at the earliest to showcase how my skills match the volunteering role. I will be available to resume immediately if you find me worthy.

Thank you for your attention and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Lekan Balogun

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the main purpose and all three requested points: you explain your interest in the museum’s artefacts, describe relevant qualities and previous volunteering, and indicate that you could start immediately. The references to history and cultural heritage make your motivation relevant, while being a fast learner and communicator supports your application. However, some points are less fully developed: you do not explain what you hope to contribute or learn through the role, and “available to resume immediately” does not give specific days or hours. The request for an interview is appropriate, but a clearer statement of your regular availability would make the application more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the application, follows with motivation and relevant qualities, and ends with availability and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, and the progression is generally easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “In my previous experience” moves from your qualities to your past role without clearly explaining what you did there, and “My interest in history…” repeats the motivation already given rather than extending the point. The final paragraph combines an interview request with availability, but the relationship between them could be clearer. Use more precise links between experience, skills, and the museum’s needs.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “artifacts,” “historical origin,” “cultural heritage,” and “good communicator.” These choices communicate your interest and suitability, and the meaning remains clear. There are some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “a challenging environment,” “opened praised,” “makes me selfless,” and “resume immediately.” In particular, “selfless” does not clearly describe a useful volunteering quality in this context, while “resume” is not the natural choice for starting a role. Aim for precise, conventional application language and check that each adjective describes a relevant skill or quality. This would make your vocabulary more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the complex sentence “The fact that the museum has quite a collection… makes me even more excited…” and the conditional phrase “if you find me worthy.” Most of the message is understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following your application. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, including “adapt quickly to new environment,” which needs an article, and “I am opened praised,” where the verb construction is faulty. “In my previous experience…, I am…” also shifts awkwardly between past experience and present tense. The letter would be stronger with more consistent tense choices and careful checking of articles and verb forms.
