Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the voluntary work at St. Mary Museum from 6pm to 8pm daily.

As we know that this museum is a platform of social gatherings and attracts tourists from nearby, so by working voluntarily I can contribute to the well-being of society. In addition, It would be a great opportunity for me to enhance my experience of social working.

I have various skills that I believe would be useful for the museum, such as managing museum finances, maintaining discipline, leadership of staff, and addressing the problems that visitors face. Furthermore, I have worked as a supervisor in a restuarant so my experience in this area would be helpful.

I would only be available for work 2 hours a day in the evening, 6pm to 8pm, starting from Monday, 19 October as I do a paid job from morning to evening in a bank.

I would be grateful to you if you would accept my application for this unpaid work at the museum.

Looking forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Rubab Asim

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements: you explain your motivation through contributing to society and gaining experience, list relevant abilities, and give specific evening availability and a start date. Your application is clear and appropriately directed to the museum. The skills section is relevant, and your restaurant-supervisor experience provides some support for your suitability. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain how particular skills would help with museum duties—for example, how your visitor-problem-solving experience could support guests or how your supervisory background could help with events. The reason for choosing this museum is somewhat general, so a specific feature of St. Mary Museum would make the application more persuasive and individual.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: the opening states your purpose, the following paragraphs cover motivation and skills, and the final section gives availability and closes politely. This makes the message easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “In addition” and “Furthermore” to connect related points. However, some connections feel mechanical, particularly the opening of the motivation paragraph, where “As we know” and “so” create an awkward link. The skills are presented as a list rather than being grouped or connected to your experience. For smoother progression, use direct transitions and link each relevant quality to an example of how it would be useful at the museum.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for a formal application and includes relevant terms such as “voluntary work,” “leadership,” “supervisor,” and “available.” You also attempt more specific expressions, including “well-being of society” and “social gatherings,” but some choices are unnatural or imprecise in context. “Social working” is not the usual expression for gaining experience in this setting, and “leadership of staff” would be clearer as a skill or responsibility. There are also spelling and capitalisation slips, including “restuarant” and “It” after a comma. Aim for natural collocations and precise descriptions of museum-related duties; this will make your vocabulary sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “as I do a paid job” and the relative clause in “problems that visitors face.” Most of the message remains clear, and the availability details are expressed understandably. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “As we know that this museum …, so …,” the clause structure is awkward: use either “As this museum …, I can …” or “This museum …, so I can …”. The sentence beginning “I would only be available” also combines several details and would be clearer if divided. Check capitalisation after sentence punctuation and use commas to separate introductory phrases and clauses.
