Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to show my interest for the part-time voluntry/unpaid work for the museum. I have always been interested in providing my services to the society and to contribute towards the enhancement of the knowledge of the society in order for them to better understand their history and culture. Every citizen should have basic information about their countries past and museums play a pivotal role in spreading that information.

Currently I am employed as a Security guard working in Mall. I have vast experience in dealing with multi-cultural folks on daily basis in order to answer their queries and I am very comfortable in conversations with strangers. I am employed as a Full-Time guard working from Tuesday to Friday each week, I will be available full day on Saturday and Monday to provide my services at museum as a voluntary worker. I can be reached at [redacted phone] or email me at [redacted email].

Sincerely,

SAM AHUJA

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements: you explain your motivation through an interest in public service and helping people understand history and culture, describe relevant experience dealing with visitors’ questions, and state that you are available on Saturdays and Mondays. Your application purpose is clear throughout, and the security role gives a relevant basis for your suitability. The ideas are generally extended, especially the explanation of museums’ role, although the motivation is expressed broadly rather than linked to a particular interest in this museum or its exhibits. You could strengthen the application by adding a specific example of how you have helped someone or by naming a museum-related skill, such as welcoming visitors or explaining information. The contact details also make the letter practical and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression from your reason for writing, to your motivation, to your experience and availability, and finally to your contact details and sign-off. This makes the main information easy to locate. Paragraphing separates the opening from the supporting details, though the second paragraph combines your work experience, interpersonal skills, schedule and contact information, so the organisation is not always as controlled as it could be. Some links are also mechanical: repeated use of “I am” and the long sentence beginning “I have always been interested” carries several related ideas at once. Separate the schedule and contact details into a short final paragraph, and use clearer transitions between your motivation and relevant experience to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal application, including relevant expressions such as “providing my services,” “multi-cultural,” “answer their queries” and “pivotal role.” These choices communicate your motivation and experience, although some phrasing is inaccurate or less natural: “interest for” would be better as “interest in,” and “voluntry” is misspelled. “Enhancement of the knowledge of the society” is also abstract and awkward; a more direct phrase would make your purpose clearer. “Folks” is conversational for a letter to a museum director, while “visitors” or “members of the public” would be more appropriate. Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than elevated wording that sounds cumbersome.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the purpose clause “in order for them to better understand” and the sentence describing your work schedule. The meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and punctuation issues are present. In “I am employed as a Security guard working in Mall,” the article and noun phrasing need attention; for example, “I work as a security guard in a mall.” The sentence joining your full-time schedule and availability with a comma is a comma splice and should be divided or linked with a conjunction. “On daily basis” also needs an article (“on a daily basis”), and “their countries past” requires a possessive apostrophe (“their country’s past”). Check sentence boundaries, articles and possessives carefully.
