Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dera Sir or Madam,

I saw an advertisement in the daily newspaper that you are looking for a volunteers in the Nehru museum. I am doing my bachelor's in arts with the histroy as a main subject. I observed in our museum there are numerous display in one form or other. Profoundly, they all are about the history of our country from eighteenth century. Undoubtedly, I have books which contain all the facts, however I want to be practically involve with this. Therefore, working as a part of team workers would be greatly beneficial for me in studies.

As the museum is near to my residency, I visited there a number of times. From my observation, everytime there are foreign visitors there. So far, I am familiar with every part of the museum. In addition to that, some of the key aspects of the museum display are permanently saved in my memory. So, you would not have to invest me from the scratch.

As I have mentioned, I am doing my studies on full-time basis. Conclusively, I am looking for part-time unpaid work only on weekends. The preferable time would be nine in the morning to till five in the evening.

All I need is platform to expand my knowledge, I hope you would be able to provide me the same.

Yours sincerely,

Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requirements: you explain that museum work would support your history studies, describe your familiarity with the exhibits and visitors, and state that you are available on weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The purpose of the application is clear throughout. The explanation of your motivation is relevant, but the benefits to the museum are less fully developed; for example, you could say how your knowledge would help visitors or staff. Your skills are also implied more than explicitly described: knowing the museum is useful, but adding qualities such as communication, reliability, or enthusiasm would make this part more convincing. The letter is appropriate in tone and includes a suitable closing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your interest, explain your familiarity with the museum, give your availability, and close with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and connectors such as “Therefore,” “In addition to that,” and “As I have mentioned” make relationships between ideas visible. However, some linking feels mechanical or does not express the relationship precisely. “Conclusively” is an awkward transition into your availability, while “So far” does not clearly connect to the previous point. The reference in “provide me the same” is also vague. To strengthen progression, use simpler, more exact links and make each paragraph develop one clear point, especially the skills you could offer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of vocabulary relevant to the application, including “display,” “foreign visitors,” “part-time,” and “expand my knowledge.” There are also attempts at less common wording, such as “profoundly” and “permanently saved in my memory,” but these are not natural in context and reduce precision. Several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors are noticeable: “a volunteers,” “histroy,” “team workers,” and “invest me from the scratch.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message, but they make parts of the letter less fluent. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “volunteer,” “work as part of a team,” and “train me from scratch,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including “As the museum is near to my residency, I visited there a number of times” and “As I have mentioned, I am doing my studies on full-time basis.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “you are looking for a volunteers” has an article and plural mismatch, and “I want to be practically involve with this” uses an incorrect verb form. Articles and sentence patterns also need attention in “on full-time basis” and “the preferable time would be nine in the morning to till five.” Practise checking subject–verb and singular/plural agreement, verb forms, and article use. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentences clearer.
