Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing with regard to part-time voluntary work at the museum. I had just set the seal on grduation in Arts. As I have a period of time to join mmy new workplace, I am interested to spend time by gaining knowledge and experience in your museum. I am fond of historical things such as, equipments, clothing, musical instruments and paintings. Plus, I really love to read about the pre-historic arts which can be helpful in my workplace later.
In addition to that, I was the president of student union in my college and organised many events. Therefore, I am capable to schedule the timing of visitors and I am good in managing a huge number of people easily. I have knowledge about security systems and alarms. So that, I can easily save visitors from accidents.
Lastly, I will be free from 8:00am to 3:00 pm. Please let me know if you need additional information.
yours faithfully,
Hafsa.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in gaining experience, describe your student-union leadership and event-organising experience, and state your availability. The reasons are relevant, and the reference to your Arts graduation helps establish your background. However, some details are not fully clear or developed. For example, “I am capable to schedule the timing of visitors” does not explain what visitor-related duties you could perform, and “save visitors from accidents” would be stronger with a specific safety skill or example. Your availability is given as a time range, but not as days of the week. Clarifying these points and making the application request more explicit would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce your application and motivation, then describe relevant experience and qualities, and finish with availability and an invitation to request further information. Paragraphing supports this sequence, while connectors such as “In addition to that,” “Therefore,” and “Lastly” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. Some linking is a little mechanical, and “Plus” is less suitable for a formal application letter. The safety point also follows the security-systems statement without explaining the connection, so the progression there is less smooth. Use fewer, more natural transitions and group related skills with a brief explanation of how they would help the museum.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of vocabulary relevant to the application, including “voluntary work,” “historical,” “student union,” “organised,” and “security systems.” These choices communicate your interests and experience, and some less common expressions show an attempt to be precise. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “set the seal on graduation,” “spend time by gaining knowledge,” and “schedule the timing of visitors.” There are also spelling errors, including “grduation,” “equipments,” and “mmy,” which reduce the overall control of vocabulary. Aim for natural phrases such as “recently graduated,” “gain knowledge and experience,” and “manage visitor schedules,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and longer structures, including the reason clause beginning “As I have a period of time…” and the conditional phrase “which can be helpful in my workplace later.” The main message remains understandable, and the letter includes several complete sentences. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “I am capable to schedule” needs a different verb pattern (“capable of scheduling”), and “I am interested to spend” should be “interested in spending.” The sentence beginning “So that” is not correctly connected to the preceding sentence, and punctuation around “such as” is awkward. Review verb patterns, clause connections, and sentence punctuation to make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
