Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in working as a part-time volunteer in one of the task that requires unpaid workers at a museum.

I believe that working as a Volunteer will not only give me an opportunity to preserve cultural identity but also gives me more insights about historical facts, and Consequently, I will utilise my time in learning productive things. Moreover, I am also a experienced History teacher for about 13 years. Therefore, I align with qualities such as Teamwork, Detail-oriented and interpersonal skills and definetely, discipline and pucntuality which will make a huge difference.

Moreover, I would appreciate it if you could give me a chance to volunteer. As you need Part-time workers, I am available from Thursday through Sunday from 2:00Pm to 7:00PM. Also, If you can make arrangements to provide me more details about programmes requirements and activities taking place as I could not find on my own.

Lastly, I appreciate for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely.,

Ravleen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requirements: you explain your interest in learning about history and cultural identity, describe relevant experience and personal qualities, and give specific availability from Thursday to Sunday, 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Your 13 years as a History teacher is a particularly useful detail that supports your application. The request for information about programmes also gives the letter a practical purpose. However, some points are asserted rather than developed: for example, you list teamwork and interpersonal skills without showing how you have used them or how they would help museum visitors. The motivation is relevant but could be more specific to this museum. The response covers the task well overall, while fuller support for these ideas would make the application more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear overall sequence: application and motivation, relevant experience and qualities, availability and a request for further information, then a polite closing. Paragraphing helps the reader identify these stages, and phrases such as “Moreover” and “Therefore” signal relationships between ideas. At times, however, the linking feels mechanical or the connection is unclear. The sentence beginning “I believe that working as a Volunteer” combines several ideas, while “Also, If you can make arrangements…” does not clearly connect the request to the preceding availability. Use shorter, more focused sentences and link each paragraph’s ideas directly. The organisation is coherent, but smoother transitions and clearer referencing would improve the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal application, including relevant terms such as “preserve cultural identity,” “historical facts,” “interpersonal skills,” and “programmes requirements.” These choices communicate your purpose and qualifications. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision: “one of the task that requires unpaid workers” is awkward, and “I appreciate for your time” is not idiomatic. Spelling errors such as “definetely” and “pucntuality,” along with inconsistent capitalisation of “Volunteer” and “Part-time,” reduce the polish of the letter. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary about museum work, such as assisting visitors or supporting educational activities, would strengthen the application.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the “not only…but also” construction and a conditional request. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “will not only give me… but also gives me,” the verb forms should be parallel; “an experienced History teacher” needs the correct article; and “one of the task” requires a plural noun. The final request, “If you can make arrangements… as I could not find on my own,” is an incomplete and confusing sentence structure. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent, particularly after “Consequently” and in the sign-off. Review agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, while keeping the useful variety of structures you already attempt.
