Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this to express my core interest to do voluntary work at your Science World museum in Delhi.
As I am pursuing a doctorate in history, I have been working persistently to expand my historical knowledge so that I can pursue my career in Science discovery sectors. Since my summer vacations for 6 months are going on, I have enough leisure time for almost the whole day to spend doing voluntarily work in your museum. Additionally, I believe that working in your museum expose me to diverse range of historic art and broaden my horizons by learning deep about our history.
Furthermore, I have detailed knowledge about several artistic documentaries and database extraction, which would be beneficial to find more historical arts from our past. While working in your museum, I might support you to explore more ancient art with detailed explanations that you could showcase in your museum.
During weekdays i would be available from 3 p.m to 11 p.m and on weekdend I am fully available.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address the three requested points: you explain your interest in the museum, mention relevant knowledge, and give availability. Your doctorate in history and interest in learning about historical artefacts provide a clear reason for applying. You also offer a potentially useful contribution by saying you could help explore and explain ancient art. However, some details are not fully developed or clearly suited to the museum: the link between studying history and a career in “Science discovery sectors” is unclear, and “database extraction” is not explained as a practical skill. Your availability is specific, but the six-month vacation and weekday hours could be clarified. A more direct account of how your skills would help visitors or museum staff would strengthen the application.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a generally clear progression: it introduces the application, explains your motivation, describes possible contributions, and ends with availability. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and transitions such as “Additionally” and “Furthermore” make the relationships between ideas visible. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear. For example, the move from pursuing a doctorate in history to a career in “Science discovery sectors” is difficult to follow, and the sentence about having leisure time does not connect smoothly to your reasons for volunteering. The ending is also abrupt: “Kind” is an incomplete sign-off. To improve the flow, make each paragraph focus on one purpose and finish with a complete, polite closing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a formal application and attempt some less common expressions, including “broaden my horizons,” “diverse range,” and “detailed explanations.” These help communicate your enthusiasm and potential contribution. However, several choices or combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “core interest,” “working persistently to expand,” “learning deep about our history,” and “explore more ancient art.” “Artistic documentaries” and “database extraction” are also unclear in this context. There is a spelling error in “weekdend,” and “voluntarily work” uses the wrong form. Choose more natural phrases for an application, such as “strong interest,” “gain a deeper understanding,” and “help identify and explain historical artefacts.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause beginning “Since my summer vacations…” and a relative clause in “art…that you could showcase.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “working in your museum expose me” needs subject–verb agreement (“exposes”), and “a diverse range” needs an article. The phrase “learning deep about our history” has an incorrect adverb form and sentence pattern; use “learning more about our history.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent in “i,” “3 p.m to 11 p.m,” and the final incomplete sign-off. More accurate agreement, articles, and sentence endings would improve control.
