IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A museum near your home is looking for people to do part-time voluntary/unpaid work. You would like to do some voluntary/unpaid work at the museum. Write a letter to the museum director to apply for the voluntary/unpaid work. In your letter
- explain why you want to do voluntary/unpaid work at the museum
- describe some skills and qualities you have that would be useful
- give details of when you would be available for work
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my interest as a volunteer at the science museum in Alberta. I recently relocated to Canada from Nigeria to complete a master's degree in Nursing Science. After my programme, I am interested in becoming a permanent resident of the country. However, to pursue this pathway, I am expected to have worked or volunteered in a canadian establishment for atleast six months and since I'm on a student visa, my best option is to volunteer in an accredited facility to gain work experience.
I have good communication skills and I believe that this is a valuable asset that employees of a museum should possess. Coupled with the fact that I have a background in sciences, I can easily communicate with visitors, guide them around the museum and give them relevant information and facts about important artefacts and history of prominent personalities.
I'll be done with my first semester examination by 31st of October and I'll to take a week break to relax. So if I'm considered for the role, I'd be available to work from 9th of November until school resumes back in January. And when school is back in session, I can work during weekends.
I hope my application is taken into consideration and I look forward to a favourable response.
Yours faithfully,
Mariam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three requested points and maintain a clear purpose: applying to volunteer, explaining your motivation, describing relevant abilities, and giving availability. Your science background and communication skills are connected to guiding visitors, while the dates and weekend availability provide useful practical detail. The explanation that volunteering may support your residency pathway is specific, though it takes more space than the museum-focused motivation and could be balanced with a clearer statement of interest in the museum’s work or exhibits. The skills section is relevant but would be stronger with a concrete example of using communication or helping others. Overall, the task is covered clearly and the ideas are extended, with some room for more focused development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: purpose and background, relevant skills, availability, then a polite closing. Paragraphing supports this structure, and links such as “Coupled with the fact” and “So if I’m considered” help connect ideas. The sequence of dates is also easy to follow. Some transitions are slightly mechanical, particularly “However” before the residency explanation, where the relationship between the ideas could be made more explicit. The first paragraph combines several points in a long sentence, so dividing it would improve readability. The response is logically organised throughout; more natural linking and tighter sentence grouping would make cohesion feel less noticeable and more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range for a formal application, including “express my interest,” “valuable asset,” “accredited facility,” and “relevant information.” These choices communicate the purpose effectively, and the museum-related vocabulary is appropriate. Some phrasing is less natural or precise: “interest as a volunteer” would be better expressed as “interest in volunteering,” while “school resumes back” is redundant. “Important artefacts and history of prominent personalities” is also broad and slightly awkward; more precise wording would strengthen the description of what you could explain to visitors. Capitalisation and spelling need attention in “canadian” and “atleast.” The vocabulary is adequate and occasionally ambitious, but more consistent collocation and precision would improve flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the conditional “if I’m considered for the role” and the clause beginning “since I’m on a student visa.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the message is not impeded. Some grammatical slips persist: “I’ll to take a week break” has an incorrect verb construction, and “school resumes back” contains an unnecessary adverb. The phrase “by 31st of October” also needs an article or a more natural date construction, such as “by 31 October.” The long sentence in the opening paragraph joins several ideas and would benefit from clearer punctuation or division. Greater accuracy in verb patterns, articles, and sentence boundaries would strengthen control.
