Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I saw your post regarding the available position for a part-time volunteer. I am delighted to inform you that I am interested in being part of your museum. I am fascinated by this position because it aligns with my bachelor's degree in the arts, as the experience I will gain will be useful in my upcoming projects; moreover, it will also enhance my skills and provide answers of my curiosity.

I personally believe I am suitable for the position because, since childhood, history has been my favourite subject. I find museums a source of knowledge and learning from our history. This positive approach towards my subject assisted me in developing a critical-thinking attitude and also developing my problem-solving skills.

Furthermore, I am available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the voluntary work; apart from that, if you also want my availability during weekdays, I would appreciate it if you schedule me on Wednesday from 2 PM to 8 PM, because I have college in the morning, starting from 6 AM to 1 PM. Overall, I hope to be a part of your prestigious museum. Thank You.

Yours Sincerely

Rohit Bhardwaj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, polite application throughout. Your motivation is supported by your arts degree and interest in history, while your availability is specific, including weekends and Wednesday afternoon. You also identify relevant qualities such as critical thinking and problem-solving. These details make the letter purposeful and sufficiently developed. To strengthen it further, explain more directly how your skills would help museum visitors or staff—for example, by assisting with enquiries or presenting historical information. The phrase “provide answers of my curiosity” also makes your reason for applying less clear; state what you hope to learn or contribute instead. Overall, the task is covered clearly, though some support could be more precise and fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce your application and motivation, describe relevant qualities, then give your availability and close politely. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “Overall” help connect the points. The reader can follow your message without difficulty. At times, however, the connections feel slightly formulaic, and the first paragraph combines several reasons in one long sentence. You could make the progression more natural by separating your motivation from the benefits you expect to gain, and by linking each skill directly to a museum-related task. This would retain the clear organisation while making cohesion less noticeable and more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “part-time volunteer,” “critical-thinking attitude,” “problem-solving skills,” and “availability.” These choices communicate your main points and show some awareness of formal style. A few expressions are less natural or precise, however: “answers of my curiosity” is unclear, “part of your museum” is less idiomatic than describing a role or contribution, and “positive approach towards my subject” is vague. “Prestigious” may also sound overstated without a specific reason. To move beyond adequate task vocabulary, choose more precise collocations and vary your wording to explain what you can contribute, rather than relying on general claims about interest and learning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “I am fascinated by this position because…” and the conditional request about weekday availability. Most of the message remains understandable, and the time details are expressed clearly. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I find museums a source of knowledge and learning from our history,” the structure is awkward; a clearer construction would be “I find museums to be a source of knowledge about history.” The long availability sentence would benefit from being divided, and there is an unnecessary space before the comma after “8 PM.” Capitalisation in “Thank You” and “Yours Sincerely” should also follow standard letter conventions. More consistently controlled complex sentences would improve accuracy.
