Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to apply for voluntary position in the museum. I am glad to help in some community work.

Actually, my vacations are going on, which last for two months. As, I have plenty of time, so I decided to help without any payments. Moreover, I am interested in learning more about culture and history, so working at musem will provide me the knowledge as well as experience.

To be honest, I think I have several skills and qualities. I have good communication skill, which will help to interact with vistors and answer their all questions. I am also a responsible and hardworking person. Furthermore, I can also handle the reception area and greeting the vistiors.

For my availability, I am available for all the days including weekends too. I would love to help especially in the morning on the weekdays.

I look forward for positive and prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Parneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requirements: you explain that you want to contribute to community work and learn about culture and history, describe communication and interpersonal qualities, and state that you are available on weekdays and weekends. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout. The explanation of your motivation is more developed than the practical details, however: “all the days” and “especially in the morning on the weekdays” leave the exact hours and preferred schedule somewhat unclear. You could also make the application more persuasive by giving a brief example of how you have used your communication or organisational skills. The main points are relevant, but some are not yet extended or specified enough for a fully developed application.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: application and motivation, relevant qualities, availability, and a closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the different parts of the message, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” show how ideas relate. The progression is generally logical, although some connections feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “also” and the sequence “As, I have plenty of time, so…”. The availability paragraph would flow more naturally if it stated a clear schedule rather than moving from general availability to a preference. Overall, the organisation is effective; more natural linking and clearer connections between details would make cohesion smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the application and relevant qualities, including “community work,” “responsible,” “hardworking,” and “communication skill.” However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems limit precision and naturalness. Examples include “without any payments,” “answer their all questions,” and “positive and prompt response”; these phrases do not sound idiomatic in this context. There are also spelling errors in “musem,” “vistors,” and “vistiors,” which are noticeable in a short formal letter. Aim to use accurate, conventional expressions for volunteering and visitor assistance, and proofread carefully. This would give you more flexibility and a more appropriate formal tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, for example the relative clause in “I have good communication skill, which will help…” and the reason clause beginning “As…”. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. “I am writing this letter to apply for voluntary position” needs an article, while “As, I have plenty of time, so…” combines two ways of introducing a reason and is incorrectly punctuated. “I look forward for” also uses the wrong preposition in this grammatical pattern. There is some control of sentence forms, but greater accuracy with articles, clause construction, and fixed grammatical patterns would make the letter more polished.
