Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you to express my keen interest in volunteering myself to do part time work at the museum. I am an art student, lately I was looking for the oppourtunity to instill the knowledge with practical work in a museum or art gallery and I would like to take the place to learn more about arts.
As having the background of arts, I can understand the working cultrure of a musem in a better way moreover I can look after the ancient artifacts during the tourist visits while sharing the details, guiding them properly and efficiently.
Currently, I am on my semester break from the university therefore I will be readily available at any time the museum needs me perhaps evenings will work better for me and can easily commute to the museum as it is near to my house.
Looking forward to a positive response and working at the museum, hopefully.
Yours Sincerely,
Hira Idrees

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that you want practical experience as an art student, describe helping visitors and caring for artefacts, and give your availability during the semester break. The application purpose is clear and the letter is appropriately directed to the museum. The skills section is relevant, but it would be stronger with specific evidence—for example, a past experience communicating with visitors or knowledge of a particular area of art. Your availability is also somewhat unclear: “at any time” is followed by “perhaps evenings will work better,” so state definite days and hours. These details would make the response more fully developed and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear, sensible sequence: you introduce your purpose, explain your background and potential contribution, then discuss availability and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, and linking expressions such as “therefore” make the relationship between your semester break and availability clear. Some sentences, however, contain several ideas joined together, particularly the sentence about caring for artefacts and guiding tourists. Separating these ideas would improve readability. The transition “moreover” is also placed awkwardly within that sentence. Overall, the organisation is clear and progression is easy to follow, while more controlled sentence grouping and linking would make the cohesion smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the application, including “keen interest,” “practical work,” “ancient artifacts,” and “guiding them.” These choices communicate your interest and the contribution you could make. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “oppourtunity,” “cultrure,” and “musem.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “instill the knowledge with practical work” and “take the place to learn more about arts” do not express your meaning idiomatically. Aim for natural collocations such as gaining practical experience and developing your knowledge of art. This would make your vocabulary more accurate and flexible while retaining the relevant range already shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including longer sentences with reasons and time clauses, and your meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, especially where clauses are joined: “I am an art student, lately I was looking” needs a clearer connection, such as “As an art student, I have recently been looking.” In “As having the background of arts,” the opening structure is not grammatically formed; use “With a background in art.” The availability sentence also needs a subject before “can easily commute,” and “Looking forward to” is a sentence fragment in this formal closing. Use complete sentences and check clause boundaries, verb forms, and articles to improve accuracy.
