Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to register for volunteer to help out in the museum. I am delighted to serve in community work.
To be honest, I really feel blessed and exitced whenever I do some voluntary work especially for our society without expecting anything in return. Along with this, every year I always try to do some unpaid work, which further makes me a ideal resident and better person in terms of doing work.
I think I have several skills and qualities that will be useful, which are communication and interpersonal skills. This will not only helps me to interact with people and provide them the information but also can able to guide the visitors about the museum. I am responsible, patient and hardworking person.
Regarding my availability, I am available for 3-4 days including weekends. Also, I love to help you out on monday mornings.
I look forward to a positive and prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Parneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain your motivation for volunteering, identify communication and interpersonal skills alongside personal qualities, and state when you are available. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the closing is appropriate. However, the reasons for choosing this museum are quite general; for example, “I am delighted to serve in community work” does not explain what interests you about the museum or its work. Your skills are named, but a brief example of how you have used them with visitors or in another setting would make the application more convincing. The availability details are useful, though “3-4 days” could be made more precise by specifying which days or hours. These details would help develop the response more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from the application and motivation to skills, availability, and a closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these main points, and phrases such as “Regarding my availability” signal a change of topic. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “Along with this” does not clearly show how the following point relates to your motivation, and “This” in the skills paragraph could refer to either skill rather than the communication skills specifically. The repeated salutation at the beginning also interrupts the opening. Use one greeting, then organise each requested point in a focused paragraph and make references explicit to create more fluent progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for an application, including “voluntary work,” “communication and interpersonal skills,” and “responsible, patient and hardworking.” This gives you enough language to convey the main message. However, several choices or combinations sound unnatural or imprecise, such as “register for volunteer,” “serve in community work,” and “a ideal resident.” “Exitced” is also a spelling error, and “positive and prompt response” is less natural than a conventional request for a reply. These noticeable issues limit the precision and naturalness of the letter, even though the reader can generally understand your meaning. Aim to learn common collocations for volunteering and applications, and proofread spelling and article use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the “not only … but also” construction and a relative clause beginning “which are.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, and articles reduce accuracy. For example, “This will not only helps me” should use the base verb after “will,” while “but also can able to guide” combines incompatible verb patterns. “I am responsible, patient and hardworking person” needs an article before “person,” and “a ideal resident” has an incorrect article. The sentence about doing unpaid work is also awkwardly constructed. Practise modal verb patterns and article use, then check that paired structures such as “not only … but also” are grammatically parallel.
