Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I , Rudra Shah , is writing you this letter as I came to know that your museum is looking for peope who can do some voluntary / unpaid work at the museum.

I want to do voluntary work at the museum as I can get to know about how the ancient pieces of the country are placed, why they are placed at a particular spot in the museum , why this piece is antique and what are the various features of the piece.I can also get to know about how things work in a museum, and what are the rules and regulations to be followed by the staff members in the museum.

I have the skills of modifying the old monuments in such a way that the visitors will not get to know whether the pieces are kept as it is from years or have been modified. I can also explain the visitors about some of the monuments in detail.

I will be available for work from Monday to Friday from 11am to 4pm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in learning about the museum and its objects, describe relevant abilities, and state that you are available Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The letter is clearly an application, and the reasons you give are relevant. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, you say you can explain monuments to visitors but do not give an example of your experience or knowledge, and the claim about modifying old monuments is unclear and may not suit a volunteer role without explanation. Add a brief example of relevant experience and clarify how you would contribute to the museum.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it opens with the purpose of writing, then gives reasons for applying, describes skills, and ends with availability. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “I can also” connect related points. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. The first paragraph contains several ideas in one long sentence, while the second repeats “why” and “how” in a list-like sequence. The letter also ends abruptly after the availability details, without a polite closing or invitation to discuss the application. Use clearer sentence boundaries and add a conventional closing to make the progression feel more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including task-relevant terms such as “ancient pieces,” “antique,” “visitors,” and “rules and regulations.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as describing the features of museum objects. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear: “modifying the old monuments” suggests altering historic objects, and “explain the visitors about” is not a natural expression. “Pieces” is also repeated where “artefacts” or “exhibits” would be more precise. Spelling errors such as “peope” and inconsistent spacing around punctuation reduce accuracy. Aim for precise museum-related vocabulary and check spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “as I came to know” and the longer sentence listing what you hope to learn. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “I … is writing” has incorrect subject–verb agreement and an unnecessary comma around the name; “explain the visitors about” has an incorrect grammatical pattern; and the long sentence about what you want to learn would be clearer if divided into shorter clauses. Punctuation spacing is also inconsistent. Use “I am writing” and “explain … to visitors,” and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries before submitting.
