Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing you this letter to express my interest to become an volunteer at kingston museum of history. I have recently encountered with an advertisement of hiring voulnteering workers for upcoming summer weekends when museum gets busy than other seasons of the year.
I have a great inclination towards history as I have read many periodical books, and watched movies and biographies of past time. I believe that I would be very helpful to guide visitors on certain topics of the Kingston region's history as an volunteer from the kingston community. As I am a professor in an university I could spend my weekends off in aiding museum during the busy summer.
I have already sent out my request form to the museum office, I am looking forward to here from mangement about my selection for volunteering work.If I would be selected I will give my best efforts to give knowledge of history to the visitors.
Yours truly,
Dhruv.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address the three main points: you explain your interest in history, identify a relevant quality as a local community member, and say you are available at weekends. The reference to helping visitors understand Kingston’s history is particularly relevant to the museum role. However, some points are less fully developed than others. Your skills are mostly implied rather than clearly described, and “I am a professor” would be stronger if you explained how teaching has developed useful communication or organisational skills. Availability is also quite general: specify which days or hours you can work. The application purpose is clear, but the letter would be more complete if you directly asked the director to consider your application and used a consistently formal greeting and closing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your application, explain your interest and suitability, then discuss your request and anticipated selection. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and links such as “As” and “If” show relationships between ideas. This gives the reader a generally coherent progression. Some connections are less smooth, however: the sentence about sending a request form moves quickly to waiting for a decision, without clearly explaining whether this letter is a follow-up or the application itself. The final paragraph also combines several purposes in one long sequence. To make the organisation more polished, give each paragraph a distinct function and use clearer transitions between your motivation, relevant skills, and specific availability.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the context, including “volunteer,” “visitors,” “history,” and “busy summer,” and your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “great inclination” and “periodical books,” but these are not natural choices in this context. Several spelling and word-choice errors—“voulnteering,” “mangement,” and “here from”—make the writing less accurate and occasionally distract the reader. Some phrases are also awkward, including “give knowledge of history.” Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than elevated wording: for example, say that you are “keenly interested in local history” and would “share your knowledge with visitors.” Careful proofreading would improve control of spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “as” and a conditional sentence beginning “If I would be selected.” The main message remains clear, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “a volunteer” needs the correct article, and “I am writing you this letter” has an incorrect sentence pattern; write “I am writing to express my interest.” In “I have recently encountered with an advertisement,” the verb pattern is incorrect, while “when museum gets busy” needs an article. The conditional “If I would be selected” should use “If I am selected.” Review articles, verb patterns, and conditional forms, and check punctuation where sentences run together, as in “work.If.”
