Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to enquire more about your recent opening in museum as a part time volunteer.

I would like to join your institution with a couple of reason. The most significant reason is I am on summer vacation from school so it is good time to join this place. The another cause is my parents really want me to start this volunteer job, as they want to enhance my skills. Overall, I can gain a lot of experience after doing a volunteer work.

I am giving you my assurity as I am fully prepared for this position because I already have six month experience in this field. Also, I attented one online course related to museuam duties.I believe these skills may be beneficial for this upcoming role.

My school will be closed for four months and I will be fully available for this except Sundays, because I go to my grandparents's house to visit them. In addition to this, I would be happy to join after my vacation as well for weekends.

I will look forward to your promtpt response, as I am super excited for this.

Yours faithfully,

Dilpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain your interest, mention relevant experience and training, and give a clear availability period, including Sundays when you cannot work. The letter also maintains a suitable application purpose. The reasons for applying are relevant, but they are not fully developed: for example, you say your parents want you to improve your skills, without explaining what you personally hope to learn or contribute at the museum. Similarly, “six month experience” and an online course are useful evidence, but you could specify the duties or skills involved. The availability details are comparatively clear. To strengthen the response, connect your motivation and experience more directly to the museum’s work and explain what you could offer visitors or staff.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement, with separate paragraphs for your reasons, qualifications, and availability. This makes the main information easy to locate, and phrases such as “The most significant reason” and “In addition to this” help signal relationships between ideas. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, however: “Overall” does not quite summarise the preceding reasons, and “Also” introduces your course without showing how it relates to your experience. The final sentence about being excited repeats your interest rather than adding a new point. Use transitions more selectively and make the progression within each paragraph clearer—for instance, explain how your experience and course prepare you for the duties you are applying to do.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to a volunteer application, including “institution,” “experience,” “online course,” and “available,” so your meaning is generally understandable. There is also some attempt at more formal wording, such as “I am writing to enquire.” However, several inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling errors make the language less natural: “a couple of reason,” “my assurity,” “attented,” “museuam,” and “promtpt.” Phrases such as “join this place” and “do a volunteer work” are also imprecise. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your application, but they limit the accuracy and flexibility of your vocabulary. Prefer conventional application phrases and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including a reason clause with “as” and a time clause beginning “because.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “with a couple of reason” needs a plural noun, while “The another cause is my parents really want” has an incorrect article and an awkward clause structure. In “The most significant reason is I am on summer vacation,” a linking word such as “that” is needed. The sentence about being available “for this except Sundays” also has an unclear grammatical reference. Aim to control articles, plurals, and clause construction, and vary sentence patterns while checking each sentence for a complete, natural structure.
