Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to apply for a part-time voluntary work at your museum.

I am Shraddha Kapadia and I work as a Data Analyst in Canada. I would like to do unpaid work so that I could help the community. A museum is near to my house which is very convenient for me. Apart from this, I like to make new connections with people as I am an extrovert person.

As I have already worked for a museum in the past, I have some basic ideas. I am a tech-savy person so I could work on data entry. Moreover, I could help arrange things at the museum. Even I could communicate with visitors regarding parking or some other issues.

I would be available to work on weekends from 8am - 5pm starting from next month.

I am eagerly waiting for your response.

Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Shraddha Kapadia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that you want to help the community, identify relevant experience and skills, and state that you are available on weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting next month. The application purpose is clear, and your previous museum experience, data-entry ability, and willingness to assist visitors are relevant. However, some points are only briefly developed. For example, you mention helping visitors with “parking or some other issues” without explaining how your communication skills or past experience would help. To make the application more persuasive and fully developed, give a specific example of your museum work and clarify what duties you could take on.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: application, motivation, relevant skills, availability, and closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking phrases such as “Apart from this” and “Moreover” make relationships between ideas clear. The progression is logical throughout. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, and “Even I could communicate with visitors” does not link smoothly to the preceding sentence. You could combine related skills into a more natural sequence and use a clearer transition, such as “I could also assist visitors with questions about parking and other practical matters.” This would make the cohesion more flexible while preserving your effective overall structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant terms such as “voluntary work,” “data entry,” “visitors,” and “available.” You also attempt more specific language, including “extrovert” and “connections,” though some choices are not fully natural or precise in this context. “Tech-savy” is misspelled, and “some other issues” is vague; these choices slightly reduce the professional tone of an application. “Basic ideas” is also less precise than a phrase describing practical knowledge or familiarity. Aim for accurate spelling and more formal, specific wording—for example, describe the visitor assistance you could provide rather than referring generally to “issues.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “As I have already worked for a museum in the past…” and “I would like to do unpaid work so that I could help the community.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and the availability details are expressed clearly. Some grammatical choices remain awkward: “a part-time voluntary work” uses an unnecessary article, while “A museum is near to my house” has an unnatural preposition pattern. The sentence beginning “Even I could communicate…” also needs a more suitable structure, such as “I could also communicate with visitors…”. Review articles and common preposition patterns, and vary sentence structures while maintaining the generally clear control shown here.
