Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you to express my interest in participating in the part-time voluntary work at the museum that you posted last week on your website. The reason why I would like to contribute to this job is that my grandfather was a member of a voluntary group, and it encouraged me to be a part of this work at least one time in future.

I would like to share my eligibility for this particular job, as I graduated in history and I have sufficient insights about historical backgrounds that I think make me a suitable candidate to work in a museum. Also, I would like to inform you that I have attended various societal conferences as part of unpaid work.

I would like to give information on when I will be available for this work, as I am currently working full-time in my professional job, which will reduce in hours soon. Therefore, I can join this work on an evening schedule for four to five hours I could able to do this job.

I would be grateful if you could give me a chance to work at your museum that really satisfies me. I am looking forward to hearing back from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Bhagwant Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requirements: you explain your motivation through your grandfather’s example, mention your history degree and conference experience, and give an evening availability estimate. The purpose of the letter is clear and the details are relevant. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, “various societal conferences” does not explain what you did there or how that experience would help museum visitors, and your availability is somewhat unclear because you say your work hours “will reduce in hours soon” without indicating when. To strengthen the application, connect each skill to a specific museum duty and state the days or period when you could begin. The response already covers the task well, but fuller, clearer supporting details would make it more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce your application, explain your background, describe availability, and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and linking expressions such as “Also” and “Therefore” make the sequence easy to follow. Some transitions, however, feel formulaic or repetitive: “I would like to share my eligibility” and “I would like to give information” announce the next point rather than linking ideas naturally. The availability sentence also runs together, making the relationship between your evening schedule and the four-to-five-hour commitment less clear. Use more direct topic sentences and separate the availability details into a complete, clearly punctuated sentence. Overall, the organisation is logical, with some room for more flexible cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “express my interest,” “suitable candidate,” and “available.” These choices communicate your purpose, and terms such as “historical backgrounds” show an attempt to use topic-related language. Some less common expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, however. “Sufficient insights about historical backgrounds” is not a natural way to describe relevant knowledge, while “societal conferences” is unclear in this context. “Participating in the … work” and “satisfies me” also do not express your intended meaning precisely. Aim for natural collocations and specific wording, such as describing your knowledge of local history or the duties you performed at events. Your meaning remains understandable, but more precise phrasing would improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the museum that you posted last week” and the reason clause beginning “as I graduated in history.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. In “for four to five hours I could able to do this job,” the modal construction is incorrect; use “I could work for four to five hours” or “I would be able to work for four to five hours.” The sentence about your current job also needs clearer structure, and the availability statement should be separated with appropriate punctuation. There are also awkward tense and time relationships in “at least one time in future.” Continue practising accurate modal forms and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
