Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to apply for the voluntary work in our local museum. I saw the ad at a bus stop, that the museum is lookin for some voluntary workers to take care of it due to temporary shortage of employies.
I am writing you to inform you that I can work part-time voluntary and, I will be more than happy to be a part of it, as the museum has played a big role in our community. as well as, it has attracted a lot of tourists into our town and help growing our local economy. I will be so proud to be part of it.
I can do some janitorial work, such as cleaning and arranging items. as I have an experience in this work, when i was in schoo I used to do this work at local restaurent part-time.
In terms of my availability, I can work on every friday and saturday as I have to attend a college rest of the days.
sincerely,
Satish.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you apply for the role, explain that the museum contributes to the community and local economy, describe cleaning and arranging items, and state that you are available on Fridays and Saturdays. The purpose is clear throughout. The motivation is relevant, although the community benefit is repeated rather than developed with a specific personal reason for wanting to help. Your skills section gives a useful example from restaurant work, but could explain more directly how that experience would help you care for museum spaces or objects. Adding one or two details about your suitability and expressing the application more formally would make the response more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a generally clear progression: application and context, reasons for volunteering, relevant experience, and availability. Paragraphing helps the reader identify these main points, and phrases such as “In terms of my availability” guide the transition. However, some connections are awkward or mechanical, particularly “as well as” after a full stop and the repeated “I am writing” at the beginning. The long second paragraph also combines several ideas that would be clearer if separated or linked more smoothly. Keep each paragraph focused on one purpose and use linking expressions only where they clarify the relationship between ideas. This would make the organisation more consistently fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “voluntary work,” “temporary shortage,” “janitorial work,” and “availability.” However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “lookin,” “employies,” “schoo,” and “restaurent.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “take care of it” does not clearly describe the museum’s staffing need, and “help growing our local economy” is not a natural collocation. The vocabulary is therefore adequate for the task but not consistently controlled. Check spelling carefully and choose more precise expressions for the role, your experience, and the museum’s contribution.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more extended sentences, and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are present, especially in sentence boundaries, capitalisation, and clause construction. For example, “I saw the ad at a bus stop, that…” incorrectly joins the clauses, while “as the museum has played…” begins a new sentence with a lowercase letter. In “I can work part-time voluntary and, I will be…,” the adverb form and comma placement are problematic. The availability sentence also needs clearer structure around the reason you cannot work on other days. Practise joining clauses with appropriate punctuation and conjunctions, and proofread sentence openings and commas.
