Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing today regarding because i am interested in applying to your museum volunteering offer.

I currently major in history and i take weakly classes particulary in folklor and local heritage, therefor i am looking for an opportunitty to apply my knowledge and enhance my communication skills.

i firmly believe my passion towards my studies resulted in my complete devotion to sharing knowledge. One important reason i am applying to this position is my beliefs in "history education" because it keeps the community alive and going. So helping the museum as a guide would be the perfect position for me aside from the great communication skills i developped in recent positions at college and other community events.

Due to recent position at a local magasine , i believe i have enough skills that could help out behind the scenes with marketing events, editing and even copyrighting articles on the website.

I have enough space in my current schedual to confortably join you, i am available all weekends, and during the week days i only have morning classes so i will be availble all after-noons.

Yours faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requirements: you explain your interest in history education and community engagement, describe communication and magazine-related skills, and give clear availability at weekends and on weekday afternoons. The application is relevant and your reasons are persuasive, particularly the link between museum guiding and your studies. This meets the task well, while showing some of the development expected at a stronger level. However, a few points remain general: for example, “recent positions at college and other community events” does not explain what you did or what communication skills you demonstrated. Briefly specifying a relevant duty or achievement would make your suitability more fully supported and the letter more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the application, explains your motivation and relevant experience, and ends with your availability. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and expressions such as “One important reason” and “Due to” signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are awkward or mechanical. The opening phrase “regarding because” combines two structures, and the long motivation paragraph moves from your beliefs to guiding and then to magazine work without a clear transition. The final availability paragraph is easy to follow, but the letter would progress more smoothly if each paragraph had one clear purpose and the links between your studies, experience, and proposed duties were made explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for an application, including “folklore,” “local heritage,” “devotion,” “marketing,” and “editing.” These choices help communicate both your interests and the work you could undertake. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural phrases reduce the accuracy and polish of the vocabulary: “weakly classes,” “folklor,” “opportunitty,” and “copyrighting articles” are examples. Some collocations also need refinement, such as “passion towards my studies” and “space in my current schedule.” The meaning is generally recoverable, but careful proofreading and more natural combinations would make your language more precise and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because it keeps the community alive” and a time clause in “during the week days I only have morning classes.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. The opening “I am writing today regarding because” is structurally incomplete, and “my beliefs in ‘history education’” does not fit smoothly with the surrounding sentence. There are also inconsistent capital letters at the start of sentences and incorrect punctuation around the closing. Review sentence boundaries, clause construction, and capitalization, then proofread for consistent punctuation. More consistently controlled complex sentences would strengthen the letter while preserving its clear meaning.
