Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in voluteering for the part-time work at the museum.
As per my school curriculum, I need to do eighty hours of mandatory volunteer work at any recognised organization to gain extra credits. I have always been interested in working at a museum because it aligns with my career goals. I aspire to become a history professor someday, and having relevant exposure in this field can boost my candidature.
I have experience working part time at the local grocery store. That job has equipped me with the skills to handle a large crowd and communicate effectively with people. Furthermore, because of my personal in history, I can also take up the role of a guide at the museum.
I am currently on my summer break from school, therefore I flexible to work on weekdays or on weekends as well. I would prefer to work in the early morning shift, because I take tuitions in the evening.
I hope you would consider my candidature for this role. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Surabhi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requirements and maintain a clear purpose: you explain that the museum relates to your career goal, describe relevant people-facing experience and history knowledge, and give your availability and preferred shift. The grocery-store example supports your claim that you can handle crowds and communicate effectively, while your ambition to become a history professor gives a clear reason for applying. To make the response more fully developed, explain more specifically how you could use your history interest at the museum—for example, by helping visitors understand exhibits—and clarify whether the required volunteer hours affect your availability. Overall, the relevant ideas are clear and supported, though a few points remain general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: purpose, motivation, relevant experience, availability, and closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow each part, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “therefore” make relationships between ideas explicit. The progression is logical throughout, and the formal opening and closing suit the task. Some connections could be smoother: the sentence about your personal interest in history follows the grocery-store skills but could more clearly explain how both sets of experience would help in the role. Also, “therefore” is slightly awkwardly placed between two clauses. More natural transitions and clearer links between examples would make the cohesion less noticeable and more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “mandatory volunteer work,” “relevant exposure,” “career goals,” and “communicate effectively.” These choices convey your meaning, and the reader can understand the letter without difficulty. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “voluteering” is misspelled, “my personal in history” appears to be an incomplete phrase, and “boost my candidature” is not a natural way to describe the benefit of experience. “Part-time work” can also sound like paid employment rather than the unpaid role in the prompt. Aim for more precise, natural phrases and proofread spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the subordinate clause “because it aligns with my career goals” and the longer sentence explaining your experience and skills. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain. In “I am currently on my summer break from school, therefore I flexible,” the verb “am” is missing, and the two clauses need clearer punctuation or a conjunction. The phrase “because of my personal in history” also has an incomplete grammatical structure. Review sentence boundaries and check that each clause has a complete verb; this would improve accuracy while preserving your varied sentence patterns.
