Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to apply for a part-time volunteer position at the museum.

I am interested in this role because I like to interact with clients and provide them with assistance whenever they need it. Moreover, I require this experience for my career goals because I am currently studying hospitality and tourism.

I think I have qualities that better fit this vacancy, such as excellent communication skills, an approachable personality, and organizational skills. I think those key skills are essential for this work. I am good at direction, which is helpful for elderly tourist.

Since I am a university student, I am off on weekends. I can do voluntary work during those days. If I am selected for this job, I will be able to start immediately.

I will wait for your response. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Joy Sim

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requirements: you explain your interest in helping visitors and gaining experience related to your hospitality and tourism studies, identify relevant personal qualities, and state that weekends are available and you could start immediately. These points make your purpose clear and relevant. However, some details are less fully developed than others. For example, “I am good at direction” does not explain what you could do for museum visitors, and your career motivation could be linked more specifically to the museum’s work. Adding a brief example of how you would assist visitors or what you hope to learn would make the application more persuasive. The letter is appropriately framed as an application to the director.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: application purpose, motivation, relevant qualities, availability, and a polite closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Since,” and “If” help connect the ideas. The reader can follow your message without difficulty. To make the flow more polished, avoid repeating “I think” in the skills paragraph and connect the qualities more directly to the duties you could perform. For instance, you could group communication and approachability with helping visitors, then explain how your organisational skills would support museum activities. Overall, the structure is effective, though some links between claims and their relevance remain quite basic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant expressions such as “part-time volunteer position,” “career goals,” “communication skills,” and “organizational skills.” These choices make your application easy to understand. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural phrases, particularly “interact with clients” in a museum context, “qualities that better fit this vacancy,” and “good at direction.” “Elderly tourist” is also an awkward way to describe the visitors you could assist. These choices show an attempt to use task-related vocabulary, but greater precision and more natural collocations would strengthen the letter. Choose words that describe museum visitors and the specific help you can offer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of straightforward sentences and more developed structures, including “because I am currently studying hospitality and tourism” and the conditional sentence “If I am selected for this job, I will be able to start immediately.” Most sentences are clear, and grammatical errors do not obstruct the message. Some patterns could be more accurate: in “I am good at direction,” the construction does not express the intended ability clearly, while “helpful for elderly tourist” needs an article or plural form. You could also vary sentence structures beyond repeated “I” openings and “I think” statements. Greater control of articles and noun forms, alongside a few more varied complex sentences, would improve accuracy and range.
