Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in volunteering at your museum. I have been looking for an opportunity, where I can give back to the community. Additionally, I have been reading a local history book and have been developing my interest in museum and its importance, therefore i would love to work as a volunteer and learn more about museum as well.
I am really good at arranging fragile items and taking care of such pieces, thus this skill would come in handy as I have visited museum and have noticed that some peices really need good detailed cleaning and needs to be rearranged accurately. Moreover, I am good with generating colour labels, so I could help the staff with re-labelling too.
I am currently enrolled in a full-time course, hence I am available after school hours during week days, which is after 5 pm. Over the weekend, I usually help my family with weekly chores and free from 3 pm until 7 pm.
I am looking forward to working with you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Najmin Manga.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requirements: you explain your motivation through community involvement and an interest in local history, describe relevant care and labelling skills, and give specific weekday and weekend availability. Your purpose is clear throughout, and the letter is appropriately directed to the museum. The skills section is supported with an example of noticing that some exhibits need cleaning and rearranging, which makes your application relevant. To strengthen the response further, develop how your skills would benefit visitors or the museum’s work, and clarify what you mean by “generating colour labels.” The motivation could also be linked more directly to why this particular museum appeals to you, rather than museums in general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear, logical progression: motivation, relevant skills, availability, and a courteous closing. Paragraphing helps the reader identify each part of the application, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Moreover,” and “hence” make relationships between ideas clear. The availability details are especially easy to follow because weekday and weekend times are separated. Some connections are less smooth where several ideas are joined into one long sentence, particularly the opening paragraph’s sentence beginning “Additionally.” The transition from your observation about exhibits to your labelling skill could also be made more explicit. Using a few shorter sentences and clearer links between examples would make the progression feel more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal application, including relevant terms such as “volunteering,” “fragile items,” “community,” and “re-labelling.” These choices make your purpose and proposed contribution understandable. There are, however, some imprecise or awkward expressions: “generating colour labels” is unclear, while “good detailed cleaning” and “work as a volunteer and learn more about museum” are not natural collocations or phrasing. Spelling slips such as “peices” and “rearranged” in this context also affect accuracy. Aim for precise museum-related language and check spelling; for example, describe “cataloguing or preparing exhibit labels” if that is what you mean.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “where,” “as,” and “which,” and the message remains clear. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “interest in museum” and “learn more about museum” need an article or plural form, and “some pieces … needs” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “Over the weekend” also needs a clearer grammatical link between helping your family and being free from 3 pm. Capitalise “I” consistently, and review punctuation in longer sentences, especially where “therefore” joins two independent clauses. More accurate control of articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries would improve the overall reliability.
