Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you doing well. I am writing this letter to apply for a voluantary work. I am a resident of the North York community. Recently, I came across the advertisement for the position at your museum and I am intrested in that.

From childhood, I have great passion for the unique, older items and I have a big collection of the antiques. Additionally, I want to develope my career in history and my ultimate goal is working as a professor in the Toronto University.

As far as I know to work at your museum, one should have specific skills. I am good at the management and I did the course, specially to enhance my skills. I can speak multiple languages like English, Hindi and Spanish.I am also attaching my certificate for your reference.

I have a part time job and I am working on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. My schedule is open for the other days and for weekends also. I can work from the 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Please, cosider my resume and certificate. I am hoping for a favourable response from your site. Thank you for the consideration.

Yours Sincerely,

Ajit Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain your interest in antiques and history, describe management training and language skills, and give specific days and hours of availability. The application purpose is clear, and mentioning your career goal helps explain your motivation. However, some points are only partly developed: you do not explain how your management skills or languages would help museum visitors or staff, and the availability could be clearer about whether you can work any time between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. The letter is relevant and complete overall, but adding a practical example of your suitability and clarifying your schedule would make the response more fully developed and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it moves from the application and motivation to skills, availability, and a closing request. Paragraphing helps the reader identify these stages, and phrases such as “Additionally” and “As far as I know” signal connections between ideas. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. “As far as I know to work at your museum” does not clearly connect your knowledge to the skills you then describe, while “Please, consider my resume and certificate” introduces documents without a clear transition from your availability. A more direct sequence, with each paragraph focused on one task point and clearer links between claims and examples, would make cohesion more flexible and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the application, including relevant terms such as “antiques,” “management,” “multiple languages,” and “certificate.” There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “ultimate goal” and “favourable response.” However, noticeable spelling errors (“voluantary,” “intrested,” “develope,” “cosider”) and some imprecise or unnatural choices reduce accuracy. For example, “big collection” is informal and vague, and “from your site” is not the natural phrase for a response from the museum. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise collocations, such as describing a “collection of antiques” and asking for a response “from you” or “from the museum.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including “I am writing this letter to apply…” and the sentence explaining your career goal. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening needs an auxiliary (“I hope you are doing well”), and “From childhood, I have great passion” needs an article and a more suitable tense or time expression. There are also problems with articles and prepositions in “the 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.” and with sentence boundaries in “Spanish.I am also attaching…”. These errors do not prevent the reader from following the letter, but checking verb forms, articles, and punctuation would improve control and make the more complex sentences more reliable.
