Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the part-time unpaid position at your museum

First of all I would like to expalin that I am an artist and I have creative tendencies. I enjoy being surrounded by art, therefore working in a museum would be very rewarding to me despite the fact that it't unpaid. Currently, what am looking for isn't money but experience. Mentioning experience, I would like to draw your attention into the fact that I have experience volunteering in art exhibitions and museums all over the world including Spain Italy and France.

Furthermore, I would like to mention that the museum right next to my home, it's about only fifty steps. In addition, I am a very patient person I talk gently to people, I can be a good guide to them since I have a considerate background in art.

I would like to enquire you that I am available from 9 am to 5 pm everyday except on Monday and saturday.

Finally, I would really appreciate it if you consider my application.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requirements: you explain that you want experience and enjoy art, describe relevant qualities and previous volunteering, and give your available hours and days. The application purpose is clear, and the detail about having volunteered in exhibitions and museums in several countries strengthens your case. This fully covers the core task, while the explanation of your motivation and the skills you could offer could be developed further. For example, specify what you did in those previous roles and how your art knowledge or patience would help visitors or museum staff. The availability is useful, but clarify whether “every day” means weekdays and weekends, and state the hours more precisely. These additions would make the application more fully supported and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a sensible overall order: you state your purpose, explain your motivation and experience, describe personal qualities, give availability, and close politely. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and transitions such as “Furthermore” and “Finally” make the progression easy to follow. However, some linking phrases feel mechanical or are used where a direct connection would be clearer. The second paragraph, for instance, moves from your artistic motivation to international volunteering without explaining how that experience relates to the role. Some sentences also run several ideas together, particularly the section about being patient and guiding visitors. Group related information more deliberately and use clear sentence boundaries and references to make the flow smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for a formal application, including “rewarding,” “volunteering,” “considerate,” and “available.” These choices communicate your interest and suitability, and the reader can understand your main points. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “creative tendencies,” “draw your attention into the fact,” and “considerate background in art.” There are also spelling errors, including “expalin,” which reduce the impression of careful writing. Aim for precise, natural expressions suited to a museum application, and check spelling before submitting. More specific vocabulary for your previous duties—such as welcoming visitors or explaining exhibits—would also help demonstrate your experience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “despite the fact that” and “since,” and your meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, especially in sentence construction and missing words. For example, “Currently, what am looking for” needs a subject, while “the museum right next to my home, it's about only fifty steps” joins clauses incorrectly. In “I am available from 9 am to 5 pm everyday except on Monday and saturday,” the day names need consistent capitalization, and the phrasing of the exception should be clearer. Review sentence boundaries, articles and complete clause structure. Breaking long sentences into shorter, accurate ones would improve control without limiting your range.
