Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir or madam,

I am writing to express my interest of doing voluntary work at the museum which is near to my home.

The main reason to participate in voluntary work is sence of satisfaction that I recieved while doing any unpaid work. As I like to help people by donating food and clothes. Also this experience will add value in my resume which will be beenficial for my future job selection.

My communication skills are very good as I got an award as good communicator in my college. I can also provide good customer service to people. I have valid driving licence, so I can drive when you need.

As I can be available only on weekends because I am full time college students. I can inform you in advance on any public holiday, so you can contact me for work. I will attach my contact details below along with my address.

I am excited to work in your museum. I hope you will contact me soon so I can join your team.

Yours faithfully,

Rajwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain your motivation, describe communication and customer-service skills, and state that weekends are available because you are a full-time student. The letter also has an appropriate application purpose and a suitable closing. The motivation is relevant, but the link between helping people and working specifically in a museum could be clearer; likewise, the driving licence is mentioned without explaining how it would help with museum duties. Your availability on public holidays is also somewhat vague. These details keep some ideas less fully developed, although the main requirements are covered. To strengthen the application, connect your qualities to likely museum tasks and give a clearer account of your schedule.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, with motivation, skills, availability, and a closing presented in a logical order. This gives the reader a clear progression and makes the purpose easy to follow. Basic links such as “Also” and “As” help connect ideas, and the final paragraph appropriately returns to your interest in joining the museum. Some connections are less smooth: “As I can be available only on weekends” is an awkward opening for the availability paragraph, and “I can inform you in advance on any public holiday” does not clearly explain how this relates to your regular schedule. Use more precise transitions and make the relationship between each supporting detail explicit to make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the application, including relevant terms such as “communication skills,” “customer service,” and “public holiday.” However, several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors reduce precision: “sence of satisfaction,” “recieved,” “beenficial,” and “interest of doing” are examples. Some expressions are also general or unsuitable for this context, such as “good communicator” and “work in your museum,” where more specific language could describe the contribution you would make. The meaning remains understandable, but the range and control are limited. Check spelling carefully and learn common application collocations, such as “apply for a volunteer position” and “gain experience.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

Your letter includes a mix of simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and verb forms. “As I like to help people by donating food and clothes” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence; connect it to the preceding idea or rewrite it as a complete sentence. In “this experience will add value in my resume which will be beenficial,” the relative clause is awkwardly attached, and “will be beenficial” has an incorrect verb form. “I am full time college students” also has an agreement and article problem. Practise complete clauses, subject–verb agreement, and accurate future forms to improve control.
