Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is evident that an increasing number of people are facing sleeping problems. This essay will discuss the main causes of this issue and suggest practical measures to address it.

The reasons for this problem vary. One of the significant causes is work-life balance. Some people are unable to make a bridge between their personal and professional life due to high pressure of work loads and some family issues. This can result in disturbing their mental health and lack of sleep. Apart from this, technology also plays a crucial role to disturb their sleep cycle. For instance, after coming from job, people tend to like scroll their mobile phones for hours due to get some entertainment, which can lead to eye and brain pressure and some time as a sleep disorders. Another contributing factor is their diet. Unhealthy eating habits effect their metabolism and consequently all these things create physical and mental issues.

Several steps can be taken to combat this problem. One of the effective solutions is limiting their screen time and doing some exercises, this can be helpful to refresh your mind and better sleep. Another remedy is maintaining healthy eating habits. A sound mind lives in a sound body, this means people who have their proper diet plan and avoid junk food are better at both physical and mental health. Use of relaxation techniques such as music therapy and guided imagery should also be encouraged in order to reduce the impact of this problem

In conclusion, phones and diet are the primary reasons for this issue. However this problem can be mitigated and ultimately resolved by implementing measures mentioned above.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention 'mental health' and 'physical issues' as consequences, these points are not fully explored or supported with specific examples or detailed explanations. The solutions provided, such as 'limiting screen time' and 'music therapy', are relevant but remain at a surface level. To reach a higher band, you should expand on how these solutions specifically mitigate the problems mentioned, providing more depth to your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for causes and solutions, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'Apart from this', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, such as in the sentence 'all these things create physical and mental issues', where 'these things' is a vague reference to the previous list. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'metabolism', 'mitigated', and 'relaxation techniques'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher score. For example, 'make a bridge between their personal and professional life' is not a standard English idiom; 'balance' or 'reconcile' would be better. Additionally, 'as a sleep disorders' contains a grammatical error in the article usage. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, 'technology also plays a crucial role to disturb their sleep cycle' should be 'in disturbing'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'effect their metabolism' (should be 'affect') and 'as a sleep disorders'. Punctuation is generally functional, but some comma splices occur, such as in the sentence regarding screen time and exercise. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to limit the score.
